to After 24 hours of very low carbohydrate, well-trained female cyclists produced less power at their first threshold and were less efficient, while the upper threshold held.

The low-carb condition was extreme (1 g/kg or less), so this is not a normal training day, and nine riders is a small group.

The useful point for coaches and athletes: if you turn up to a session or a test under-fuelled, your zones may not be where you think they are.

You can learn more about your zones & fuelling needs with one of bike tests... you can even use your own bike! Head to www.athletelab.uk to learn more.

This is one of the clearest pictures yet of fuelling and fatigue.

The same riders lost about 15% of their critical power on water, about 7% on 60 g/h and about 4% on 120 g/h. Sprint reserve (W prime) dropped the same amount in every trial, so carbs appeared to protected sustainable power, not the top end.

Two cautions: this was 16 trained riders in a lab, and 120 g/h is a lot for the gut. Build up gradually and find the dose you can actually tolerate.

Did you know that we can test your fuel usage and carb needs across race/training intensities and with your own bike set-up. To learn more about our servicesgo to www.athletelab.uk

kTwo groups with near-identical 10 km times, but one group did regular long runs and the other did not. After 90 minutes, the long-run group had lost about half as much running economy.

This was a comparison of existing habits in men, not a training trial, and the long-run group also ran more each week. Still, it is a good argument for keeping the long run in your plan.

At Athlete Lab, Not only do we look at your data 'now', we assess your overall profile and training history to understand your needs and develop your individual report and recommendations.

This study showed what happened after ~2.5 hours of steady running with no carbohydrate: thresholds slip by around 4 to 6% and each kilometre costs about 5% more energy.

Two things were associated with holding up better: higher aerobic fitness for threshold, and stronger leg extensors for running economy.

If you want to understand your thresholds, economy and fuel/carb usage to stop the 30km rot, then get in touch at www.athletelab.uk

Most runners blame the wall on empty glycogen stores. A 2026 review argues it is bigger than that: fuelling, heat, gut comfort, muscle fatigue and pacing all interact, and the 30 to 35 km stretch is where it tends to show.

The practical message is that you prepare for the wall on several fronts, not one. Which of the five has caught you out before?

🚵 Client Spotlight: Col du Galibier Conquered
Huge congrats to David, who took on one of the toughest climbs in the Alps this weekend, summiting the legendary Col du Galibier (2,642m) after a warm-up ride with 2,000m of climbing already in the legs.

'The ex*****on was spot on: Z3 up the Telegraphe, holding low Z4 up the Galibier, then enough left in the tank for a Z5 push over the final 2km to finish strong.'

What made the difference wasn't just fitness, it was the plan. A clear structure around effort, heart rate and fuelling meant David could ride his own race with confidence, while others in the group who hadn't prepped the same way blew up from going too hard too early and not fuelling properly.

If you're looking to conquer your performance mountain, then get in touch to get the data and insight you need.
