We’re hiring! 👀🌿

Since 1844, London’s oldest herbalist has been looking after customers from our shop on Walworth Road, and our busiest time of year is nearly here. We’re looking for two new people to join our team.

📦 Mail-Order Team, full-time
Tuesday to Saturday - You’ll help customers over the phone, take orders, and make sure every parcel is checked and ready to go out.

🛍️ Healthstore Team, part-time
Mondays, with extra days available on a flexible basis. You’ll serve customers in the shop and pick goods for mail orders.

🎁 25% staff discount
📍 Walworth Road, SE17 (Elephant & Castle)

An interest in herbs, aromatherapy or natural health is a bonus, but it’s not essential. Both roles involve lifting and carrying.

We're always a little taken with how much history sits in an ordinary jar of herbs. So here's a quick tour of what grows on our doorstep, and how far some of it travelled to get here. 🌿

Coriander, dill and parsley - all kitchen staples, and all three travelled thousands of miles to reach us, carried across Europe by the Romans, planted in their gardens here and never gone since.

Heather, meanwhile, never had to travel at all. It's been part of life here for thousands of years, in our thatch, our brooms and even our ale, and there's 5,000-year-old heather rope at Skara Brae to prove it. Right now it's turning the moors purple, same as it does every August.

Then there's southernwood, which has gathered more names than any herb really needs. Lad's Love, Maiden's Ruin, Old Man and Sabbath Day Posy, that last one earned by the sprig people carried to church for its sharp, lemony scent.

A few of the many reasons why it's one of our all-time favourite herbs are:

🤍 It’s a proper old-school soother. The inner bark turns silky the moment it meets water, forming a gel that coats and settles as it goes down
🥣 Traditionally taken to support everyday digestive comfort
🍯 A long-standing favourite for soothing a scratchy throat

And here's a fun fact for you - did you know that, apart from soothing drinks, this bark was also woven into baskets and rope, and even used to build canoes?
