Veterans in Canada can get reimbursement for medical cannabis through Veterans Affairs, while former service members in countries like the UK still have to pay out of their own pocket for medical cannabis treatment.

We believe the UK government should reimburse those who have served and find relief from medical cannabis treatment. 

It’s the least we can do to support those who have served.

In countries like Australia and Canada, subsidised medical cannabis treatment has been available to veterans for years.

Over the past five years, Wellford has supported thousands of Canadian veterans through the Vets for Healing programme.

For many people, like Karl, the armed forces provides a deep sense of belonging.

But when Karl was medically discharged after two and a half years, that structure vanished and life stopped making sense.

Transitioning back to civilian life can be an isolating journey. That’s why it’s so crucial to understand what veterans truly experience, and how chronic conditions continue to shape their lives long after leaving service.

"...Denying it, trying to bury it, hiding it like it's something shameful, that's all it's ever going to feel like in the end.

If somebody would have sat there years ago and said Karl? You know if you do X, Y, Z, you'll get the support you need, I think life would have got a lot better a lot sooner."

A recent study published in the Epilepsy & Behavior journal by researchers at the University of Minnesota assessed over 1,900 patients in the state's medical cannabis program.

The researchers found that nearly 70% of patients with seizure disorders experienced reduced seizure frequency when using state-authorised medical cannabis products, which were predominantly CBD-dominant.

- 68% of participants reported overall improvements in seizure frequency.

- Approximately half of the participants noticed a direct reduction in weekly seizures.

Support UK veterans. Help us remove the barriers to care.

After leaving the forces, many veterans feel that they are left to fend for themselves, often having to cope with chronic pain, anxiety, depression and PTSD.

In our survey of 300 UK veterans, 65% felt healthcare support for veterans was insufficient, and 61% had needed support since leaving the service, but had not sought help.

We commissioned a survey to understand what life is like for veterans after leaving the armed forces.

Veterans in Canada have received subsidised medical cannabis treatment for depression, anxiety, PTSD and chronic pain since 2007.In the UK, veterans still have to pay for their own treatment.

We’ve just launched our parliamentary petition to campaign for government-funded medical cannabis for UK veterans.
