With October being ADHD Awareness Month, I’ve been thinking about how much our understanding of ADHD has changed.
When I was growing up, ADHD was mainly associated with young boys who were visibly hyperactive and disruptive at school. If you were quiet, forgetful, dreamy, overwhelmed or always losing track of things, particularly if you were a girl, it was much easier for those difficulties to be missed.
Now, more adults are beginning to look back at their lives with a different understanding. Things they may have blamed themselves for, such as struggling to start tasks, losing track of time, forgetting important things, switching between jobs or feeling overwhelmed by several small demands, may finally begin to make sense. Many of these people have been capable and successful, but have had to put in a huge amount of effort behind the scenes to keep everything together.
I’ve also noticed more people with ADHD coming for Spinal Flow, and it has been interesting to hear words such as calmer, quieter and more grounded after their sessions. One of the things people seem to value is having time when nothing is being asked of them and they can simply lie down and allow their body to settle.
It works with the spine and nervous system through light therapeutic touch, helping the body release patterns of physical and emotional stress and activate its natural capacity to regulate and restore itself.
Someone who has spent years masking, overthinking, pushing through overwhelm or working extremely hard to appear organised can carry a great deal of tension and exhaustion in their body. Supporting that part of their experience can be valuable.
At FlowEssence, I can also draw upon Breathwork, HeartMath, Meditation, Movement, Reiki and other practices, depending on the individual and what they find helpful.
I’ll be sharing more throughout the month about ADHD, executive dysfunction, women in midlife and some of the things that may help. Greater awareness is giving many people the chance to understand difficulties they may have spent years believing were simply personal failings.
