Why did a $26.7 million effort to preserve Miami’s history turn into an argument about a septic tank?
Archaeologists working ahead of a luxury condo development discovered the Miami Circle in 1998: a 38-foot arrangement of holes carved directly into limestone. Florida and Miami-Dade County helped buy the property to protect it. Florida Memory
An archaeologist questioned whether the circle might be part of a 1950s septic system. But the original plumbing plans showed wastewater flowing away from it, and excavation evidence showed the tank had actually cut through older holes. The circle came first. Archaeology Magazine
The site is now recognized as an ancient Indigenous landmark associated with the Tequesta people. Visitors can explore the park, but the original archaeological features remain covered for protection. Greater Miami & Miami Beach
