The latter years of my nursing career were spent promoting complementary therapies within the nhs , in conjunction with MIND . This was my response to the over reliance and limitations of psychopharmacology in the spaces I found myself working in . Restraining and medicating people was not something I liked doing .
I had my hands and my life experience and instinctively knew there were better ways to “ care “
This along with my mother’s illness lead me on a long journey of exploration into spirituality healing and bodywork . i’m still on that journey .
Now 20 years on i’m seeing an explosion in the wellness space that troubles me . The same quick fix mentality and corporate greed that results in the overprescribing of medication and lack of resources and real care for people is very much present in the wellbeing industry .
Whilst it’s good that once seemingly controversial or so-called wacky ideas are now accepted, sought after and even receive funding in forward thinking organisations , the amount of people out there marketing themselves as healers able to transform your life in 7 days is disturbing. I’m seeing videos , public displays of people having somatic releases on instagram with therapists that look about 20 marketing themselves in ways that pray on people wanting that “quick fix “. Honestly it’s so disrespectful to people living with trauma , to the people that actually do work day in day out in really difficult spaces . People who for example work in marginalised communities , people that hold space for the most challenging people in our society . The people that often go unseen for the most part because it’s not pretty . People generally don’t want to look in those spaces because it’s hard . it takes time, a great deal of self awareness, love compassion , often sacrifice and commitment. Anyone trauma informed with any integrity would not use such cheap marketing skills and reduce healing that has often been appropriated from other cultures to cheap performative displays for financial gain .
