In 2020, I herniated a disc in my lower back. L5-S1.

I wasn’t an osteopath back then. I was just someone in pain, trying to work out what was going on and whether I’d ever train properly again.

So when you walk into my clinic worried about your back, I get it. I’ve been on your side of the couch.

Here’s what I learned on the way back:

Rest helped at the start. But what got me back was movement, step by step, guided, and slowly building trust in my back again.

Your body adapts to what you do most. If you’re too scared to move, it learns to stay stiff and guarded. Sometimes it just needs reminding that it’s safe.

That’s why this video isn’t a flex. It’s 72.5kg of proof that a back injury doesn’t have to be the end of the story.

Everyone’s different. You might never want to lift anything heavier than your shopping. That’s fine. The goal is your goal: running, lifting, playing with your kids, getting through the workday.

But I hold myself to a high standard, so I can hold your recovery to one too.

I’ll look at how you move, find what’s driving the pain, and build a plan around what you want to get back to. And I’ll reassess you every visit.

A year of stretching it, strengthening it, resting it.

Barely moved.

When I looked further up the chain, the real driver was restriction in his hip.

His back was just the part complaining loudest.

Once we addressed the hip, the back pain that had been stuck for a year actually started to shift.

Told it’s sciatica? A lot of the time it’s not actually your sciatic nerve or a disc at all.

It’s tension in the piriformis or the glutes pressing on the nerve as it passes through.

Real sciatica exists - but this gets used as a catch-all term more than it should.

The treatment for each is completely different, so it’s worth knowing which one you’re actually dealing with rather than just assuming.

If your sciatica hasn’t shifted no matter what you try, this might be why.

Four practitioners.
Four different opinions.
No real progress.

When I looked, the piece nobody had picked up on wasn’t where the pain was.

It was somewhere nobody had thought to look, because everyone was focused on where it hurt, not what was driving it.

It’s not that the others weren’t doing their job. Sometimes the answer just lives outside the frame everyone’s been working in.

If you’ve been passed around without a clear explanation, that’s not bad luck and it’s not your body being awkward.

It just means the full picture hasn’t been looked at yet.

A headache doesn’t always mean the problem is in your head.

A lot of the time it’s coming from the neck or the jaw.

Tension builds up there and refers pain upward, so you take the painkillers, rest in the dark room, do everything right, and it keeps coming back.

Because the actual source hasn’t been touched.

It’s one of the first things I check when someone comes in with recurring headaches - how the neck and jaw are actually moving.

Not just where it hurts.
