How times have changed!
When I started my aesthetics business, I was a senior nurse in A&E. I’d spent years working in emergency medicine, yet somehow, the business I was building alongside it was seen by some as a bit of a girly beauty hobby. A little side hustle. An attempt to make a quick penny.
Even within the medical profession, aesthetics wasn’t seen as real medicine. And honestly, that attitude hasn’t completely disappeared.
Some friends were brilliant and supported me from the start. Others just didn’t really get it. And I often felt like I had to justify why I wanted to do it, as though I needed to prove it was more than just a passing interest. I played it down a lot, and didn’t really talk about it at “my real job” for fear people wouldn’t take me seriously. Making people’s wrinkles go away was not the same as saving lives and so I tried not to mix the two worlds.
I knew what I was building. I knew the responsibility involved, the clinical knowledge required, and the importance of putting patient safety first.
I didn’t get into aesthetics because it was trendy. I built a career in it because I genuinely loved the speciality.
And I still do 🤍
Funny how an industry people once dismissed is now the career everyone wants to talk about.
Nurse first. Always. 👩🏼⚕️
