"Don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy" - The Eagles

It beautifully summarises how meditation and mindfulness can help us break out of the incessant thoughts running through our brains.

If you've never considered it - it's worth a look.

Happy Wednesday!

I hope your week isn't giving you too much stress.

Sadly, evidence shows that we may be stressing ourselves to obesity? But how?

I come across a lot of people who are worried about carrying 'extra' weight.
But crucially, many of them also suffer from stress, which is compounding their situation without them realising it.

Stress triggers our fight or flight response. It was programmed into our brains long before we even recognised ourselves as human, hundreds of thousands of years ago. It prepares our bodies to either fight off an attacker, or flee, shutting down bodily processes that are not a priority in that moment, such as our digestive system.

These days we don't often get confronted by wild animals trying to eat us for lunch, but our bodies can't tell the difference between that kind of threat and the stress of missing that work deadline, or presenting at that "must win" sales meeting. The offending flow of cortisol is just the same.

So stress can be a life saver. But, sustained cortisol in our hectic lives can lead to CHRONIC STRESS, and it's at epidemic levels. The trouble comes when we're also carrying extra weight. Our body essentially believes that it is not safe to lose weight - it believes it is fighting for our life, and shuts down the digestive system. Conversely, when your nervous system feels safe, it also believes that it is safe to lose weight. You're working WITH your body’s natural systems instead of bypassing them. For many, weight loss then becomes automatic, effortless, and even inevitable.

So how can we manage this stress when we're trying to shift unwanted pounds?

Here are three stress busters:

✅Moving your body more is a natural way to foster relaxation and calm through the generated endorphins. That's on top of burning those calories, of course. It doesn't have to mean the gym. Walking is your friend, especially after meals!

✅Adapting your food habits to avoid refined carbohydrates and ultra-processed ingredients maximises vital nutrients and balances your metabolism, which will get the body's systems running optimally - especially the digestive system! Furthermore, the resultant good gut health is much more important to our mental wellbeing and stress resilience than many people realise.

✅Simple breathing exercises, meditation, and even tapping (EFT), are all very effective at controlling chronic stress if done properly and regularly. Using them 'ad-hoc' also helps to manage our fight or flight response in the moment too.

Having a wide selection of tools in the 'stress resilience' toolbox were a life saver for me, and I would strongly recommend to anyone that they do their own research and try them out, especially if you are stressed and carrying some extra weight around, like I was for years.

Today is World Arthritis Day, which also kicks off Bone and Joint Week.

Given the implications that inflammation has for arthritis and joint health, I wanted to focus on this topic today.

Inflammation in the body is often a good thing. It's the body's short-term protection response to injury, infection or irritation.

Chronic low-grade inflammation, however, is a persistent immune response often caused by lifestyle and environmental factors such as excess body fat, poor diet, smoking, stress, poor sleep, sedentary habits and exposure to toxins. The fact that it occurs silently and without symptoms has resulted in it being dubbed 'the silent killer'.

Over time it can damage healthy tissues and has strong links to type-2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity, some cancers, neurodegenerative diseases, arthritis and joint deterioration.

What can we do to prevent this silent killer?

Focus on Anti-Inflammatory Foods:

✅ Fruits and Vegetables: Berries, leafy greens, and brightly coloured produce are excellent sources of antioxidants and other anti-inflammatory compounds.

✅ Oily Fish: Salmon, tuna, and mackerel are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which have potent anti-inflammatory effects.

✅ Whole Grains: Oats, whole wheat, and other whole grains provide fibre and other nutrients that can help reduce inflammation.

✅ Nuts and Seeds: Walnuts, flax seeds, and chia seeds are good sources of omega-3 fatty acids and other anti-inflammatory compounds.

✅ Olive Oil: Extra virgin olive oil contains antioxidants and oleocanthal, a compound that can help reduce inflammation.

✅ Legumes: Beans and lentils are high in fibre and protein and can help reduce inflammation.

Limit Pro-Inflammatory Foods:

❌ Processed Foods: Stay away from highly processed foods like microwave dinners, sugary cereals, and packaged snacks, which often contain unhealthy fats, sugar, and sodium.

❌ Sugary Drinks: Avoid sugary soft drinks, juices, and other sweetened beverages, as they can contribute to inflammation.

❌ Red and Processed Meats: Limit or avoid red meat (other than grass-fed products) and processed meats like bacon (unless nitrate-free or 'naked'), sausage, and hot dogs, as they can be high in saturated fat and may contribute to inflammation.

❌ Refined Carbohydrates: Reduce intake of white bread, pastries, and other refined carbohydrates, which can cause blood sugar spikes and inflammation.

❌ Fried Foods: Limit or avoid fried foods, as they are high in unhealthy fats and can contribute to inflammation.

The 'Mediterranean Diet' is a well-known anti-inflammatory eating pattern that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and olive oil, with moderate amounts of fish, poultry, and dairy, and limited red meat.

Could you make some small lifestyle adaptations to guard against inflammation?

Struggling in your 40s or 50s?

If you're someone who is feeling like work is taking too much out of you and all other aspects of your life, including your health, are taking a back seat, then you could well be in place that I found myself in 2016.

I had allowed work to take over almost every waking moment. Exacerbated by the fact that those waking moments extended into sleepless hours of the long dark nights.

It wasn't that work was responsible for slave-driving me into the ground. It was more about an ignorance of health and wellbeing. A gradual decline from brain fog, afternoon energy crashes, caffeine flooded daily survival, a lack of resilience to stress and a dangerous perfectionist attitude that prevented the end of the day switch-off.

Coupled with that, everything outside of work had slowly altered:

Less…
⏬️ social interaction
⏬️ time with family and friends
⏬️ exercise
⏬️ health eating

⏫️ body weight
⏫️ moods bordering on depression
⏫️ general anxiety and an inability to 'cope'
⏫️ sleepless nights

🔥For me it took total burn-out and an inability to work to educate me on how dangerous it is to take health and wellbeing for granted. I didn't work for 7 months.

There wasn't much support around, but luckily for me I obsessed about running (the only thing that gave me relief from depression) and researching self-help. For 7 months that was all I could muster.

I was lucky to stumble across the right self-help, and I gradually got back to health, and back to work.

This was my main inspiration for becoming a health coach, but if any of this rings bells for you, I'm not interested in selling you a package. I would genuinely like to talk about your situation. To listen and hopefully offer some free advice based on what worked for me.

Why would I do this? I've recently born witness to too many men in this age group who weren't as lucky as me. They didn't make it out of the fog. 'Sad' doesn't even begin to cover it.

Do you have positive energy in your life?

There's a lot of talk about 'energy' these days, especially if you are in and around the health and wellbeing space.

Some people are sceptical about this side of the 'wellbeing sector', but I am increasingly a fan of what some people view as 'woo-woo'.

Like many people, I've been on a health and wellbeing journey that saw challenges in almost all of the key dimensions - weight management issues, dietary issues, stress issues, sleep issues, mental health issues, and the ultimate life disruptor - burnout (or 'breakdown' for my fellow 50 plus-ers)

I've been very lucky. From finding the right self-help during my lowest points to being inspired to change careers and support other professional men with their health and wellbeing journeys, I'm fitter and healthier than I've ever been.

One of the best bi-products of this? - Positive Energy.

It's an intangible, unexplainable positivity that somehow attracts positive thoughts, better ideas, more successes and significant wins.

It's as if the machine we call the human body is firing perfectly on all cylinders, well fuelled and less pollutants, tuned to be resilient to extra load and performance when needed, fully restored and cleansed by optimal sleep and stress resilience maintenance. Fewer gremlins in the works. The ultimate machine to carry you through the race of life ….and experience that winning feeling.

As we come to the end of another week, I wish you positive energy in your life.

We ALL have the power to make a big difference to our health and wellbeing.

With chronic health conditions of every kind on the rise and our health services under increasing pressure, it’s never been more important to start taking action to help ourselves and each other towards better health.

Our lifestyle and our habits and behaviours around what we eat, how we move, sleep, rest, manage stress and engage with our family, friends and community can all support, or undermine, our health.

I work with men in their 40s, 50s and 60s - mainly professionals and leaders in the IT, finance and accountancy sectors.

Why this particular demographic?

Well, they tend to be the ones who…

🤔Sit for 8-10 hours a day, often in front of screens

🤔Lack any significant movement through the day

🤔Have a high cognitive load

🤔Regularly work to tight deadlines

🤔Take on significant responsibility

🤔Operate in a perfectionist culture

🤔Eat at their desk or on the run

🤔Are exposed to significant stress on a daily basis

They are also the ones I can relate to most, having sailed very close to the wind with my own health and wellbeing many years ago in IT consulting leadership roles.

Health coaching is increasingly helping all kinds of people to perform at their best and prevent ill-health. I provide health coaching for individuals, and for organisations who've embraced the connection between employee wellbeing and productivity for success. "I wish I knew in my 30s and 40s what I know now"

A new client heard me say this during a recent networking event.

I'd been talking about my own health and wellbeing journey through a 30 year corporate IT career:

💭A journey that saw my health take a nose-dive, through poor lifestyle choices, stress, anxiety and depression.

💭A journey that resulted in burn-out and stopped me from working for 7 months.

💭A journey that forced me to navigate medication and self-help (seemingly the only two solutions on offer at the time).

💭A journey that taught me the key health and wellbeing essentials.

💭A journey that made me realise that prevention would have been so much easier than cure.

💭A journey that inspired a change in career 7 years later to offer the help to others that wasn't there for me.

So many of the men I speak to have already run into trouble with their health and wellbeing having reached their 40s or 50s.

However, this new client was really struck with that phrase, "I wish I knew in my 30s and 40s what I know now" - apparently it really resonated.

His next big birthday is his 40th, and he had just started to see some early signs of the common health and wellbeing challenges that can make us more vulnerable to as we get older.

My talk had told him all he needed to know about the need for prevention, and learning from the mistakes of countless other clients. Being there for his young family was a key driver. He was keen to sign up to get on top of his own ill-health prevention plan.

So, I'm glad to say that, as well as supporting professional men in their 40s, 50s and 60s with health & wellbeing challenges, I am now increasingly helping guys in their 30s on simple preventative action that will keep them resilient through their career and beyond.

I still wish that I knew in my 30s and 40s what I know now, but then I probably wouldn't have lived the road that led me to health coaching and supporting men's health - an amazingly rewarding job for which I'm so grateful.

We live in a world that demands immediate gratification and fast answers.

Health and wellbeing is not different.

People often ask me for a quick answer to the question -
What's needed to get health and wellbeing on track - To feel at one's best and prevent the usual suspect killers.

Now we all know that everyone is different, and a big part of being a health coach is sitting down with someone and understanding them. Understanding their health objectives, their health status, their health history, their lifestyle, their life schedule, their beliefs, their values, their needs.

You can't get to a tailor-made plan without that.

However, at a high enough level of abstraction, it is possible to summarise the core of what health and wellbeing is all about…

🚶‍♂️‍➡️ Move regularly through the day
🧠 Build stress resilience
😴 Manage Sleep
🍏 Eat mainly whole foods
🫂 Stay connected to people
☠️ Minimise toxins in food and everyday products

It's more-or-less as simple as that from the 10,000 feet view, and it's not a coincidence that this aligns with the generally-accepted pillars of lifestyle medicine which you'll find at the core of most preventative health care initiatives around the world. But what are these key pillars?

🚶‍♂️‍➡️Physical Activity
🧠Mental Wellbeing
😴Quality Sleep
🍏Healthy Eating
🫂Social Connection & Relationships
☠️Minimising Harmful Substances

Of course, the detail behind each of these is complex and looks very different for each of us as individuals. But one thing's for sure. Each of these areas interact with all the others, so they ALL need to be considered. If one area is out of balance you can guarantee there's some level of effect on ALL the others.

Health coaches are trained in all of these areas. Health coaching is increasingly helping all kinds of people to perform at their best and prevent ill-health. I provide health coaching for individuals, and for organisations who've embraced the connection between employee wellbeing and company success.
