🚨 4 Common Moving & Handling Mistakes🚨

Moving and handling is essential for keeping staff and the people we support safe. But simple mistakes can increase the risk of injury, falls and avoidable incidents.

❌ Not planning the move

Before starting, check the care plan and moving & handling assessment. Consider the route, environment, equipment and number of staff required. This ensures the move is carried out safely and reduces risk to everyone involved.

❌ Using the wrong equipment or not using equipment when required.

Hoists, slide sheets and transfer aids are designed to reduce risk. Using the wrong equipment, using it incorrectly or attempting a manual move when equipment is required can cause injury to you, your colleagues or the person you support.

❌ Poor posture and technique

Bending, twisting, over-reaching or positioning yourself incorrectly can put unnecessary strain on your body and increase the risk of musculoskeletal injuries.

❌ Poor communication

Good communication is essential. Make sure colleagues understand their roles and keep the person you are supporting informed throughout the move. Explain what you’re doing, provide reassurance and check they feel safe and comfortable.
