Flu season is here – would you know the symptoms and what to do if you become unwell? πŸ€’

Flu symptoms usually come on quickly and can include a sudden high temperature, an aching body, feeling very tired or exhausted, a dry cough, sore throat, headache, difficulty sleeping and loss of appetite. Some people may also experience diarrhoea, tummy pain, nausea or vomiting.

If you have flu, most people can look after themselves at home. Get plenty of rest and sleep, drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration, and consider paracetamol or ibuprofen for a temperature, aches and pains if these medicines are suitable for you. A pharmacist can also offer advice about treatments and flu remedies. πŸ’§πŸ›Œ

Try to stay at home and avoid contact with others if you have a high temperature, feel hot, cold or shivery, or are not well enough to carry out your usual activities. 🏠

Seek medical advice if you feel very unwell, become short of breath, your symptoms have not improved after 7 days, or you're in a group at higher risk of becoming seriously ill.

🧠 A guide to screen time for under 5s

How to help little brains develop healthy screen habits.

⏱️ Limit total screen time, wherever possible.

Under 2 years: avoid screen time except shared activities that encourage bonding and interaction.

2-5 years: try to keep to 1 hour a day, less if possible.

A few simple tips:

πŸ“Ί Choose slow paced content with simple stories and clear, slow speech
πŸ”’ Use parental controls to block inappropriate or harmful material
πŸ‘ͺ Lead by example, as children copy the screen habits around them
🍽️ Swap screens at mealtimes for music, games or conversation
πŸ“– Swap screens 1 hour before bedtime for bedtime stories

Large amounts of screen time are linked with negative effects on children's health and development, including social, emotional and language development, sleep and weight.

October is National Cholesterol Month – do you know your cholesterol levels? ❀️

High cholesterol means you have too much cholesterol in your blood. It does not usually cause symptoms, so a blood test is the only way to find out if your cholesterol is high. Left unmanaged, it can contribute to blocked blood vessels and increase your risk of heart problems and stroke. 🩺

There are positive steps you can take to help manage your cholesterol. Eating a balanced diet, being physically active, maintaining a healthy weight and stopping smoking can all support your heart health. Some people may also need cholesterol-lowering medication. πŸ₯—πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ

This National Cholesterol Month, take some time to think about your heart health and find out whether you should have your cholesterol checked. ❀️

πŸ’™ Are you a carer? Please let us know.

If you look after, support or help someone who couldn’t manage without you, you may be a carer – even if you don’t think of yourself as one.

Throughout October, we’re encouraging patients who are carers to let our team know when they next visit the practice, including when attending one of our COVID vaccination clinics.
By identifying yourself as a carer, we can make sure our records are up to date and help you access the right information and support when you need it.

πŸ’¬ Simply speak to a member of the team at your next visit.

Your support matters too. πŸ’™
