Cramping isn’t just solved by electrolyte tablets or training more 😶
This non-league player couldn’t get through a game or a hard session without going down with cramp. Even worse the thought of it was changing how he played. Had him hiding from the ball and not making runs 🫣
We assessed his diet, very low in carbs, and a big focus on protein and size. He’d built the size but wasn’t fuelling it to move for 90 minutes. Hydration habits were inconsistent as well - perfect recipe for quick fatigue and cramping 🪫
So we added carbs around sessions and matches, from familiar foods like jollof rice, brought in fast-digesting options pre-match, and used smoothies and juice to cover hydration and fuel together 🧃
Trialled everything in training first, so he trusted it on matchday 🔑
A couple of weeks in, the cramping stopped. His words after a long session: “I felt like I could have gone for a lot longer.” 🔋
Every player’s different, so this isn’t a generic fix-all. But if cramp or fatigue is holding you back, it’s worth looking at what’s on your plate before you look at anything else 🍽️
