Why I don't endorse products and key things to look out for.
The ASA has just upheld a claim that a supplement brand broke the advertising rules. As well as making claims about the speed of weight loss they also used health professionals to endorse supplements.
So when a company comes to me and asks me to endorse their supplements that they are making claims on, even legitimate ones, I say no. We are not allowed to endorse products with health claims.
But I also don't endorse other products, which includes getting paid to promote other products, because otherwise how are you to know whether I am just promoting something for my own gain.
So next time you see a health professional promote a product, don't forget to ask yourself, is this the only and best product or are they just saying it because they get some benefit themselves.
And if you are a health professional endorse a product with a health claim, report it to the ASA because we need the industry to improve for the safety of everyone.
Remember supplements aren't bound by the same rules as medications, they don't have to have the same proof to make the claims they would about medications but there are still advertising rules.
