Flexibility at work: approaching work differently ☕
Last week, some of our team spent a bit of time working together from a café. We love the flexibility of remote working, but it’s also nice to have the option to catch up in person, share ideas and enjoy some social interaction along the way.

Flexibility can mean different things in practice. While some people value the chance to connect with colleagues in person, others may work best from home, with adjusted hours, a quieter environment or different ways of approaching tasks and meetings.
The important thing is not to assume that one way of working suits everyone. Workplace policies and long-standing practices can sometimes create unnecessary barriers, particularly for disabled people, when there may be other ways to approach things.

Creating a more inclusive workplace starts with listening, being open to doing things differently and recognising that even a small adjustment can make a real difference. 💜

Since October is National Disability Employment Awareness month in the US, we thought we would highlight some facts about disability employment here in Manchester. In the UK generally, government data shows around 1 in 4 of the working-age population are classed as Disabled.

Within Manchester, research by the Greater Manchester Coalition of Disabled People found that 27% of the Disabled people surveyed left their work due to disabling barriers since 2020. These barriers may be inaccessible recruitment practices, reducing people to their symptoms and showing a lack of recognition of people’s skills.

📣If you work for a Manchester-based workplace and want to learn more about how to ensure your organisation is inclusive, check out our suite of inclusive training workshops.

Project Spotlight: Foundations for Change (F4C).
F4C uses the lived experience of disabled people and their service providers to create frameworks which truly include disabled people in the things which matter most to them. We use these to connect with providers to help them make a difference and keep them alive through continued feedback and lived experience. You can learn more about our existing frameworks here (https://ow.ly/gOjZ50ZTtNv), currently we have frameworks for Employment, Housing and Health.

📚 New research published!

We’re pleased to have contributed to a new article by the Cambridge University Press, exploring the role of relationships in Supported Employment and what relational approaches can look like in practice.

Breakthrough UK as a DPO partner, with our Elaine Astley joined researchers and fellow DPO partners from the University of Strathclyde, University of Glasgow, Speakup Self Advocacy and University of Sheffield.

The research draws on the experiences of people using and delivering Supported Employment services, highlighting the importance of relationships, lived experience and personalised support.

A big thank you to everyone involved in bringing this research together, and to Cambridge University Press for publishing it in the Journal of Social Policy.

On this week’s Meet the Team, meet Aaliyah 👋

Aaliyah joined us earlier this year as our MDC Administrator and Governance Support Officer, supporting the Manchester Disability Collaborative. She plays a key role in keeping things organised - helping keep MDC’s work aligned across partners and progressing.

With a background in law and administration, she brings a strong attention to detail and a structured approach to supporting MDC's work.

We’re really glad to have Aaliyah on our team! 💜

Last Friday, our team attended the Manchester Job Show at the Trafford Centre 🎯
It was a great opportunity to connect with employers and have some really positive conversations about building more inclusive workplaces. Many encouraging chats with representatives from Evenbreak, BM Caterers, The Birtenshaw Group, Focus Group and many more!

We’re always keen to work with organisations who want to support disabled people into employment - whether that’s by offering placements or learning more through our inclusive workplace training.
If you’d like to get involved or find out more, feel free to get in touch 💬

Did you see this article in the Financial Times this week? An increase of 26% in Disabled People taking their employers to tribunal. There are lots of resources available to employers to prepare the workplace for disabled people, reduce the likelihood of these issues recuring, and remove the barriers to an inclusive workplace. Breakthrough UK provides social model training, the employment workstream, and the Foundationally Inclusive Workplace Course. Please get in touch for more information on any of these.
