Life is made up of so many things beyond our health: the people we love, the places we want to see, the goals we’re working towards and the experiences we look forward to.

Looking after yourself matters, but so does making memories, pursuing your interests and enjoying the things that make life meaningful. You deserve to experience life in all its fullness, with room for your health and everything else that makes you who you are.

Keep living, keep exploring and keep making room for what matters to you.

There’s so much we wish we could tell our younger selves, and even more that we’re still learning.

From taking care of our health and speaking up for ourselves to chasing our dreams and giving ourselves room to grow, every girl deserves the knowledge, support and freedom to become who she wants to be.

This International Day of the Girl Child, the call is to end child marriage and invest in girls’ rights. Every girl deserves the chance to learn, make choices about her future, live safely and thrive.

Here’s to raising girls who know their worth, understand their health and feel empowered to speak up for themselves.

Happy International Day of the Girl Child!

When you’re living with diabetes, it can sometimes feel like everything comes back to food. But managing diabetes is about more than what you eat. Your everyday routines, how you feel and how you look after yourself all matter too.

We’re talking about some of those often-overlooked parts of looking after your health.

Sometimes, you need support but don’t even know how to explain what you’re feeling or what you need. And that’s okay. Yo...

Sometimes, you need support but don’t even know how to explain what you’re feeling or what you need. And that’s okay.

You don’t have to find the right words or have everything figured out before you deserve support. Sometimes, simply having someone who listens and stays is enough.

This week, remember: you deserve support, even when you cannot explain exactly what you’re feeling need.

“I have diabetes.”

And suddenly, everyone has a story.

Someone tells you cinnamon can cure it. Someone else knows a person who “reversed” their diabetes. Another person asks if you were eating too much sugar and quietly suggests that maybe your diet caused it.

Most of this advice may come from people who genuinely want to help. But good intentions do not make medical advice accurate, and diabetes is far more complicated than a food, a home remedy or a single lifestyle choice.

When you have questions about your diabetes, your healthcare professional is a better place to start. Write down the things you are unsure about before your appointment so you can ask, understand your treatment and make informed decisions. And sometimes, talking to a diabetes community can help too, especially when you want to hear from people who actually understand what living with diabetes can feel like.

You don't need to take every piece of advice that comes your way just because you have diabetes. Know where to get advice you can trust.

October brings Black History Month, a time to celebrate our stories, our people and the communities we come from.
It’s also a reminder to keep having the health conversations that matter, from diabetes to breast health awareness and everything in between.

May this new month bring you good health, meaningful conversations and plenty of reasons to smile.

Happy New Month community!

We’ve all heard it before: “My neighbour used this and her diabetes disappeared.” “Try cinnamon.” “Drink this every morning.” “My grandmother never needed all these medicines.”

Sometimes the advice comes from love, tradition or someone genuinely trying to help. But diabetes treatment is not one-size-fits-all, and what helped one person does not automatically make it safe or effective for someone else.

There is nothing wrong with valuing traditional knowledge. The important question is knowing when a home remedy should stay a home remedy, and when your health needs proper medical advice.

So the next time someone says, “My grandmother’s remedy worked for us,” maybe ask: Is there evidence that it works for diabetes, and is it safe alongside the treatment I’m already taking?

Love your culture. Ask questions. Protect your health.
