💭C o n f i d e n c e: What does the word mean to you, if really thought about it…..?
Because possibly the biggest assumption about coaching is that it’s all confidence work… and maybe it is if we layer up what confidence breeds, inhibits, fuels. Like, identity, purpose, overwhelm, prioritisation, wallpaper words, self belief, internal validation. All coaching fodder. Some highly interlinked with confidence.
Confidence is a loaded word though. Loaded, yet overused (in the same way “unprecedented” went in 2020 and it seems to have diluted its meaning?)
For some, “confidence” tips into soft territory; a soft metric. A nice to have. Personally, I think it’s under-analysed. Its mammoth, actually. Confidence is how much we believe in our ability to do a thing/a task. It’s based on evidence. Yet we take our own meaning of it into the world without pause or reflection.
💭 What about b e l i e f?
Where does your mind go now?
This takes the “thing/task” part away and is purely about belief in ourselves, as a human!
I had a brilliant session with a client around Confidence vs Belief, and it was incredible to hear how brains (1) make assumptions (I’m guilty in this scenario), and (2) take a meaning into decades of life without question, based on assumptive knowledge (this is universal / a human trait).
I’ll share his words later this week. I LOVE these conversations.
What / who comes to mind when you think of confidence?
Did you think about yourself lacking confidence, or of someone you think exudes it? 🌈
