What actually happens in your body during acupuncture? We get asked this a lot, so here it is in plain English.
When the needles go in, they stimulate nerves in your skin and muscle. Those nerves send signals to your spinal cord and brain, and your body often starts to shift out of “on alert” mode and into “rest and recover”.
As you rest, your body releases endorphins, its own natural pain relief, and blood flow increases around the areas being treated. Many people feel a deep, heavy calm. Some even drift off.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture is about helping Qi and Blood flow freely.
Modern research points to the nervous system. NICE guidance also includes acupuncture as an option for some long-term pain and headaches.
Nervous about needles? That’s really common. They’re fine, sterile and single-use, and most people barely feel them go in.
