The Hilot Way of Treatment:
How It Works
A traditional hilot session follows a distinct, multi-step process focused on identifying and removing energy blockages, rather than just rubbing the muscles.
1. The Diagnostic Touch (Pagsasalat):
The manghihilot (healer/ Therapist ) begins by scanning your body with their hands. They check your pulse and feel your muscle temperature and texture to look for areas of imbalance.
2. The Banana Leaf Scan:
Strips of warm banana leaves coated in virgin coconut oil are passed over your body. Because banana leaves act as a natural ionizer and retain heat, they will visibly "stick" or wrinkle over areas of inflammation, fluid retention, or muscle tension. This tells the healer exactly where to focus.
3. Clearing the Lamig:
The therapist areas of lamig (a Filipino concept for trapped cold energy, muscle spasms, or knots). They use a sequence of traditional strokes to break it down:
• Haplos: a light stroke
Short, light strokes to warm the skin and spread the oil.
• Hagod: means gliding
Long, deep, and heavy strokes to calm the muscles and locate deep knots.
• Pindot & Pisil: means Pressure
Focused, targeted thumb or elbow to apply pressure and squeezing to physically break down the hardened muscle tissue and release trapped air.
• Piga: means Wringing
A broad, wringing motion using the palms to disperse the tension and relax the entire muscle group.
4. Post-Treatment Herbal Teas:
Afterward, you are usually given warm ginger or lemongrass tea to help flush out toxins and keep the body warm.
