Congratulations to Sue! 🎉

Susan Lee, Primary Care Co-ordinator at
Teesside Mind, was one of 600 people nominated for a Carers UK award and one of just five finalists in the Individual Campaigner category.

Although Sue didn’t take home the overall award for her category at last week's award ceremony in London, she’s a winner in our eyes! 🥇

Through her work with GP surgeries and across health, local authority and community services, Sue has helped strengthen support for unpaid carers across South Tees. It’s brilliant to see her work recognised in this way.

Celebrating Sue's Carers UK Award nomination 🎉

We're delighted to share that Susan Lee, Primary Care Co-ordinator at Teesside Mind , has been shortlisted as one of five finalists for a Carers UK Award in the Individual Campaigner category.

Sue is someone we work closely with at We Care You Care, so we know first-hand just how much time, energy and commitment she puts into supporting unpaid carers across South Tees.

Over the past year, Sue has played a huge role in helping GP practices become more carer friendly, with 13 practices achieving Carer Friendly status and a further seven working towards accreditation. But that's just one part of the work she does to ensure carers are recognised, listened to and able to access the support they need.

Sue brings people together, drives positive change and is always looking for ways to improve the lives of unpaid carers. This recognition is incredibly well deserved, and we're so proud to see her nominated.

Good luck, Sue. We'll be cheering you on! 👏

Medical Centre in Middlesbrough is celebrating two years as a Carer Friendly GP Practice with support from Teesside Mind. 🧡🎉

Maria Cutajar, Assistant Practice Manager at Newlands, and an unpaid carer shares her advice for anyone caring for a family member or friend:

"The single best piece of advice I would give is not to try and manage everything on your own.

"Let the people around you know that you are caring for someone, whether that's family, friends, your employer or your GP practice. There is often more support available than people realise, but it can only be offered if others know your circumstances."

"I also think it's important to let your GP surgery know if you are a carer, as this can help ensure you receive information, support and any reasonable adjustments you may need while balancing your caring responsibilities."

If you look after a family member, friend or neighbour who couldn't manage without your support, remember to let your GP practice know you're a carer.

🧡 In Falls Awareness Week its important to remember falls can affect confidence and independence however there are simple steps you can take to help reduce the risk for someone living with dementia.

🏠 Keep floors clear – remove loose rugs, trailing wires and clutter from walkways.

🎨 Create contrast – contrasting colours can help make furniture, toilet seats and changes in floor level easier to see.

🩺 Seek advice – if you’re worried about your balance or risk of falling, speak to your GP or another health professional.

🛠️ Get the right equipment – a needs assessment can help identify equipment or adaptations that could make everyday activities safer.

The Steady On Your Feet South Tees website has practical advice on home safety, staying active, strength and balance, as well as a free online self-assessment to create your own personalised Falls Prevention Action Plan.

The Six Week Mindfulness Programme is a free, online course for people aged 65+. We’ve been running mindfulness programmes for older adults since 2020, and thanks to funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, we’re now able to offer this six-week programme to older adults in your area.

The programme is a gentle, supportive group course designed to help older adults focus on their wellbeing, manage stress and difficult emotions, and develop practical mindfulness skills.

It is led by a Chartered Clinical Psychologist specialising in older adult mental wellbeing and delivered by a BAMBA-Registered Mindfulness Teacher.

Feedback from previous participants suggests that the course can help people feel less stressed and isolated, sleep better, and manage low mood or anxiety. It also provides a calm, friendly space for older adults to connect with others and spend some time focusing on themselves.
