💚 Liver Cancer Awareness Month

October is Liver Cancer Awareness Month — an opportunity to raise awareness of liver cancer, its risk factors and the importance of looking after your liver health.

Liver cancer does not always cause obvious symptoms in its early stages. Possible symptoms can include:

💛 Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)

⚖️ Unexplained weight loss

🍽️ Loss of appetite

🤢 Feeling sick or vomiting

💢 A lump or pain in the upper right side of the tummy

😴 Feeling unusually tired or weak

💧 Swelling of the tummy

These symptoms can have many different causes and do not necessarily mean you have liver cancer. However, if you notice something that is unusual for you or doesn't go away, please speak to your GP.

💚 Looking after your liver:

- Keep alcohol within recommended limits

- Maintain a healthy weight

- Eat a balanced diet

- Stay physically active

- Don't smoke

- Take steps to reduce your risk of hepatitis

If you have a long-term liver condition or other risk factors, make sure you attend any monitoring appointments recommended by your healthcare team.

🦴💙 Osteoporosis Awareness

Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens bones, making them more fragile and more likely to break. It can affect both women and men, and often has no symptoms until a bone is broken.

There are things you can do to help keep your bones healthy:

🥛 Eat a balanced diet with enough calcium

☀️ Make sure you get enough vitamin D

🚶 Stay active, including weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercise

🚭 Avoid smoking

🍷 Keep alcohol within recommended limits

🩺 Speak to your GP if you think you may be at increased risk

Risk can be higher following the menopause, with a family history of osteoporosis or hip fracture, long-term use of certain steroid medicines, low body weight, smoking or heavy alcohol use.

If you're concerned about your bone health or your risk of osteoporosis, speak to the Surgery via Anima.

💗 Breast Cancer Awareness

This month, we’re raising awareness of breast cancer and the importance of knowing your breasts and attending breast screening when invited.

🎀 Breast screening can help detect breast cancer early, sometimes before there are any signs or symptoms.

If you have received an invitation for a mammogram, please make sure you attend. If you have missed your appointment or think you are overdue, contact the West Suffolk Breast Screening team directly.

📞 West Suffolk Breast Screening: 01284 713941

⚠️ Don't wait for your next mammogram if you notice a change. Contact your GP if you notice a lump, change in the size or shape of your breast, changes to the skin or ni**le, unusual discharge, or any other new or concerning change.

💗 Support is also available for anyone affected by cancer.

Know your breasts. Attend your screening. Speak up about changes. 💗

💗 Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day – 15 October

Today we remember and honour the babies who have died during pregnancy, at birth or in infancy, and recognise the families who are living with their loss.

Pregnancy and baby loss can happen at any stage and can have a profound and lasting impact. There is no right or wrong way to grieve, and every experience is different.

💗 If you or someone you know has experienced pregnancy or infant loss, please remember:

You don't have to go through it alone.

It's okay to talk about your baby and your feelings.

Grief can come in waves and may change over time.

Support is available whenever you feel ready to ask for it.

As a GP practice, we are here to listen, support and help. If you are struggling following a loss, please contact our practice to discuss the support available to you.

🕯️ Today, we remember the babies who are no longer with us and hold their families in our thoughts.
