Behaviour is what we see. It doesn’t always tell us what is happening underneath. Understanding a behaviour does not mean removing boundaries. It means becoming curious about what may be contributing to it.

For some neurodivergent children, overwhelm, sensory demands, anxiety, frustration or communication difficulties can affect how they respond.

Save this as a reminder to look underneath the behaviour.

Children are not automatically born knowing how to regulate intense emotions. Some need more explicit and individualised support. Regulation is not about stopping difficult emotions. It is about helping children understand and manage them safely.

Anxiety doesn't always look like panic.

Sometimes, it looks like checking;
Researching.
Planning.
Reassurance seeking.
Avoiding.
Over-preparing.
Or replaying conversations long after everyone else has forgotten them.
One useful CBT question is:
"What am I doing because I'm anxious, and what does that behaviour teach my brain?"

Which one do you recognise most?

Sometimes, it's not the mistake itself that matters most — it's what a child learns the mistake means.

“Mum is angry. I’ve done something terrible.”
“I should have known better.”
“I need to get things right.”
“What if I make another mistake?”

For some children experiencing anxiety, worries about making mistakes can become part of a wider pattern of excessive worry, perfectionism and reassurance-seeking.

This doesn't mean we shouldn't correct our children or have boundaries.

We can say:

“Let's clean this up.”

“Next time, what could you do differently?”

“I was frustrated, but we can sort this out.”

The aim isn't perfect parenting — that's another impossible standard!

It's helping our children learn that mistakes can be acknowledged, repaired and learned from without becoming something they need to fear.

Mistakes are part of learning.

Something new is coming to Cheta Wellness…

For some time, Cheta Wellness has been focused on supporting emotional and psychological wellbeing through therapy.

But wellbeing isn't only about what happens in our minds.

How we move, how we feel in our bodies, our confidence, our energy and the habits we build can all be part of looking after ourselves.

That's why I'm excited to introduce…

CHETA MOVE

A new fitness and movement side of Cheta Wellness, starting with Glow-Up Circuit Training — an exercise session created especially for women in Milton Keynes, alongside virtual exercise sessions, which you can join from the comfort of your home.

Glow-Up Circuit Training is a welcoming and supportive space where women of different fitness levels can move, become stronger, improve their fitness, and feel more confident — without judgement or pressure.

This is your opportunity to focus on yourself, build healthy habits, connect with other women, and enjoy the benefits of movement.

You don't need to already be fit. You just need to be willing to start.

Cheta Wellness — supporting the whole you.

More information about Glow-Up Circuit Training sessions coming soon.

Here are a few CBT tips to try:

Pause and notice your thoughts. Ask yourself, “Is this thought helpful?” or “Is there another way to look at this?”

Challenge negative thinking. Try replacing “I can’t cope” with “This feels difficult, but I can take one step at a time.”

Break things down. When life feels overwhelming, focus on one small task rather than everything at once.

Use grounding techniques. Take a few slow breaths, notice what you can see, hear, and feel, and bring yourself back to the present moment.

Keep a thought diary. Write down the situation, your thoughts, feelings, and actions. This can help you notice patterns and understand what may be affecting your mood.

Be kind to yourself. Speak to yourself the way you would speak to someone you care about.

Taking care of your mental health is a journey, and small steps can make a big difference.

Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to introduce my practice to a group of wonderful women.

In the black community, we have definitely come a long way with regards to mental health. However, we still have a long way to go.

ADHD and Austism exists amongst all human races. Unfortunately, some people still have this belief that authorities are quick to label a child autistic or ADHD when they are not.

This is untrue(from my experience anyway). We must be accepting of reality because that is the only way we can provide the right support to our children.

If your child is neurodivergent and you are struggling to understand what is going on for them. I do provide support for children and their parents in understanding and processing their emotions and overcoming their worries/anxieties, which can often present as melt downs or anger outburst.
