A new IOF position statement assesses the potential link between MGUS and fracture risk and offers the first clinical guidance on bone health for patients with MGUS.

Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is a haematological condition among older adults, yet its impact on bone health is not widely recognised.

IOF hopes the Bone Cancer Working Group's new position statement will raise awareness of this challenging condition and encourage timely recognition and appropriate management of bone fragility in patients with MGUS, such as screening for MGUS when investigating a fragility fracture, undertaking a comprehensive bone evaluation when clinical MGUS is diagnosed, and treating patients at risk with antiresorptive agents at osteoporosis rather than oncology doses.

The paper will be especially relevant to GPs, endocrinologists, rheumatologists, haematologists, gynaecologists, geriatricians, advanced practice nurses, and internists.

Men, you can also take steps to know your risk and protect your bones.

Vertebral fractures (VFs) are often under-recognised and underreported, despite their importance in identifying osteoporosis and preventing future fractures.

🔎 Only 14.7% of vertebral fractures were documented in the impression section of the radiology report, highlighting a critical gap in recognition and reporting.

What can we do to improve detection and strengthen secondary fracture prevention?
