Healthy eating doesn’t have to start with taking something away. Try adding one useful thing today: fruit with breakfast, vegetables at lunch, or a source of protein that keeps you satisfied. One addition is a perfectly good beginning.

Rather than a rigid plan, try writing three movement options: a two-minute stretch, a ten-minute walk and something longer for when you have time. Then choose from the menu according to your day. Flexibility isn’t failure, it’s how habits survive real life.

Some walks are spectacular. Some involve drizzle, a housing estate and remembering to buy milk. Both count. If you’ve been waiting for perfect conditions, here’s permission to take the ordinary option. Ten minutes is better than the imaginary hour you never get round to.

You don’t have to call it exercise for it to do you good. Carrying shopping, gardening, dancing while dinner cooks, all adds movement to the day. The trick is noticing what’s already possible, then perhaps doing a little more. What counts as movement in your day?

A ten-minute walk counts. So does walking to the shop, taking the longer route to the kettle or getting outside between meetings. Movement doesn’t need a training plan to be worthwhile. What ten-minute opportunity could you find today?

Build connection into ordinary routines: walk with someone, call while cooking, stay for coffee, learn someone's name in class, accept invitations occasionally.

The spectacular social life isn't necessary. Repeated small contact matters.

Some of the things we call "exercise" quietly do much more than exercise. Classes, walking groups and events give us repeated low pressure contact with other humans.
And that regualar contact can matter enormously.

We tend to photograph the 20%: parties, weddings, trips, big gatherings. But relationships mostly live in the 80% - the message, the cup of tea, the weekly class, walking alongside someone, asking "how are you?" and actually listening to the answer.

Small connections count.

Some things are worth being tired for.

I know that sleep matters.

I know that regular bedtimes, consistent routines and adequate recovery are important for my health, particularly as I get older.

But I also know that some of my favourite memories involve being awake when I probably should have been asleep.

Walking through the night with a headtorch. Watching the sun come up after hours on my feet. Staying up far too late because the conversation was too good to end.

None of those experiences would score particularly well on a sleep hygiene checklist. 😂

But they score rather highly on my life well lived checklist.

And that's the distinction I've been exploring this month with my 80/20 approach to Five Healthy Habits.

The 80% is about building routines that support our health. The 20% is about making room for the experiences that make life interesting.

That doesn't mean sleep and recovery aren't important. Quite the opposite.

I want to look after myself most of the time precisely because I want to have the energy, resilience and capacity to enjoy those extraordinary moments.

And when the adventure is over?

I rest. I recover. I return to my usual routines.

No guilt. No punishment. No starting again.

Because I don't want to reach old age having achieved perfect sleep hygiene but missed out on the things that made me feel alive.

Healthy habits should help us live more, not experience less.

Late night? Weekend away? Poor sleep? Don't turn it into a catastrophe.

Get daylight. Eat normally. Move normally if you feel able.

Return towards your usual bedtime and waking pattern.

Back to base, not back to square one.
