Behind the scenes with GTS Med OH 📸

On Monday, we explored why health surveillance should be about more than meeting a legal requirement. Today, we're sharing how we put that commitment into practice by continuing to invest in our team's knowledge and skills.

This month, our Health Matters Occupational Health team attended refresher training delivered by GTS Med OH, focusing on audiometry and spirometry.

These assessments play an important role in monitoring hearing and respiratory health where employees may be exposed to workplace noise or substances that can affect breathing. Ensuring our practitioners keep their knowledge and practical skills refreshed is an important part of maintaining the quality of the services we provide.

Because effective health surveillance isn't just about having the right processes in place. It's also about having knowledgeable, competent practitioners who understand the importance of carrying out assessments correctly, recognising potential changes and supporting appropriate follow-up.

Learning doesn't stop once we've gained experience. Taking the time to refresh our skills helps us reflect on our practice, reinforce good habits and continue developing as professionals.

A big thank you to GTS Med OH for delivering the training and supporting our team's continued professional development.

Here are a few behind the scenes photos from our time with the team 📸

Is health surveillance something you do because you have to, or do you see it as an opportunity to make a real difference?

It's easy to think of health surveillance as another item on the compliance checklist. Something that needs to be arranged, completed and recorded.

But what if we looked at it differently?

Behind every assessment is a person. Someone whose health may be affected by their work, whose symptoms might otherwise go unnoticed, or whose future wellbeing could benefit from early intervention.

When approached thoughtfully, health surveillance can do much more than help employers meet their obligations. It can support the early identification of potential work-related ill health, inform preventative action and help organisations better understand the risks their people face.

The real value isn't simply in completing the assessment. It's in understanding what the findings mean and what needs to happen next.

In our latest blog, we explore why health surveillance deserves to be viewed as more than a legal requirement — and how a more proactive approach can benefit both employees and employers.

Because protecting people's health at work should always mean more than ticking a box.

What does an Occupational Physician actually bring to the workplace? 🩺

When an employee’s health situation becomes complex, unclear or medically challenging, specialist Occupational Medicine expertise can help employers make better-informed decisions.

An Occupational Physician looks beyond the diagnosis, considering the individual’s health alongside their role, working environment and job demands to provide practical, clinically informed guidance.

From complex fitness-for-work cases and rehabilitation to workplace risks and health surveillance, specialist input can provide greater clarity on both what an employee’s health means for their work and how they can be supported.

With Donna and David joining the Health Matters Occupational Health team, we’re increasing our availability for Occupational Physician appointments, Occupational Health service days and specialist clinical support.
