🌿 The 3Ps - Avoid the Boom & Bust cycle

If you live with fatigue, chronic pain or a long-term condition, learning to manage your energy can make a real difference.

Try the 3 Ps:

⏱️ Pacing
Break activities into manageable chunks and take a REST before you feel TIRED. Don’t wait until your energy has completely run out.

📅 Planning
Think about your week ahead. What do you already know about your energy levels? Spread activities out and build in time to rest.

⭐ Prioritising
Ask yourself: Does this really need to be done today?
Separate your tasks into NEED to do and WANT to do.

And remember to protect some of your energy for the things you enjoy ❤️

Pacing is a skill - and like any skill, it gets easier with practice. The more you use the 3 Ps in everyday life, the better you can find a balance that works for you.

The goal isn't to do less. It's to use your energy in a way that helps you do more of what matters to you. 🌿

As if the PhysioFunction team needed an excuse to eat goodies! 😂

Whether it’s chocolate biscuits with a cuppa, a sweet treat between sessions or something delicious appearing in the staff room, we’re always happy to do our bit to celebrate! 🍪☕

Rehabilitation takes hard work, dedication and teamwork, so we think the occasional chocolate treat is a pretty good way to keep everyone smiling! ❤️

The all-important question is… are you a milk, dark or white chocolate fan? 🍫👇

🥊 The roles have been reversed!

This time, Karin, who has Parkinson’s disease, is wearing the boxing pads while Holly throws the punches!

When a colour is called, Karin has to quickly step to the corresponding dot - forwards, backwards or to either side - while lifting the pad into position ready for the punch.

It might look like a bit of fun, but there’s a lot going on! 👣🥊

The exercise challenges balance, stepping and reactive responses, helping Karin practise how quickly she can respond to a change in her environment. These are important skills when working on reducing the risk of falls.

A great example of how we can make rehabilitation challenging, purposeful and enjoyable at the same time! 💙

Jon recently hosted a broadcast from the Academy of Physical Medicine (www.academyofphysicalmedicine.co.uk) studio in Higham Ferrers, interviewing Alan Sealy, a physiotherapist specialising in balance problems at In Balance Physio (www.inbalancephysio.co.uk).

Their topic was cervical dizziness – and there were some really interesting take-home messages.

🧠 Our brain creates an expectation of how our body should move. If the movement produced by the body doesn’t match that expectation, for example because of stiffness or tightness in the upper neck, some people can experience dizziness. Improving movement and encouraging someone to explore and use their increased range can often help symptoms settle. Importantly, not everyone with a stiff neck experiences dizziness.

👂 There can also be a history of a previous vestibular problem, such as labyrinthitis. Neck stiffness may then affect the body's ability to compensate for the underlying vestibular dysfunction.

🔄 Interestingly, distinguishing between vestibular and cervical dizziness isn't always necessary, as the treatment approaches and home exercises can often overlap.

💊 Medication can be helpful during the acute phase to manage symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. When beginning rehabilitation, reducing this medication should be done with the support of the person's GP or ENT specialist.

A fascinating conversation exploring the relationship between the neck, balance system and brain – and how rehabilitation can help people experiencing dizziness.

This week's spotlight is on Lauren, who works incredibly hard to support our clients and bring positive energy to the team every single day!

We asked Lauren:

🏰 Fictional home: What fictional place would you love to live in?
🍏 Forever food: If you could only eat one food forever, what is it?
🏝️ Desert island duo: You are stranded on a desert island: which coworker do you bring?
🧠 Superpower choice: What superpower would you pick if you could have one?

The answers:
🧙‍♂️ Hogwarts
🥧 Caramel apple crumble and custard
💃 Holly – we could dance all day!
🔮 Mind reading

Would you have guessed any of those? Drop a comment below to let us know if your forever food is a sweet treat too. 👇

🍞 Happy World Bread Day! 🍞

At PhysioFunction, as some of you know, we have our very own bread-making enthusiast… our Clinical Director, Jon! 👨‍🍳

When you can't find Jon, there’s a good chance he’s experimenting with a new loaf, perfecting his latest creation or planning his next bake. And the best bit? He’s always bringing in delicious homemade treats for the team to enjoy! 😋

We’re certainly not complaining. Fresh bread, happy team and a little taste of home baking make for a lovely treat during the working day. ❤️

So, today we’re celebrating bread in all its forms - and giving a special shout-out to Jon for keeping us well fed!

Tell us… are you a sourdough fan, a crusty loaf lover or do you prefer a soft, fluffy bread roll? 👇

🌿 Making the most of our surroundings!

Liam, who has a brain injury and ataxia, loves enjoying the fantastic views from PhysioFunction.

Walking outdoors over different surfaces, including gravel and grass, provides an extra challenge for Liam’s balance and coordination. But he’s always keen to get outside and make the most of it!

He also really enjoys spending time standing tall, completely free of support, taking in the fresh air and the views. 🌳💙

It’s a great reminder that rehabilitation doesn’t always have to take place inside the clinic. Getting outdoors and incorporating real-life challenges into therapy can make sessions both meaningful and enjoyable.

Looking good Liam 👏👍🌟

🔄 The Boom & Bust Cycle

Having a “good day” when you live with chronic pain, fatigue or a long-term condition can feel like a window of opportunity.

So, you think: “I feel good today - I’d better get everything done!”

You catch up on the housework. Run errands. Tackle the jobs you’ve been putting off. Maybe even squeeze in a few extra things.

But then comes the bust.

Pushing yourself too far can lead to increased pain, overwhelming fatigue or a flare-up of symptoms, sometimes leaving you needing to rest for days.

And so the cycle begins again:

💥 Boom: Feeling better → doing more → pushing through
⬇️ Bust: Symptoms increase → exhaustion → prolonged rest

Over time, this pattern can make it harder to manage your symptoms and can have a real impact on everyday life.

The answer isn't necessarily to stop doing things on your good days. Instead, learning to pace yourself and spread activities out can help you find a more sustainable balance. 🌿

Sometimes, doing a little less today can help you do a little more tomorrow.

💪 10 years on – and Suzanne is still challenging herself!

Suzanne continues to make progress in her stroke recovery, showing that neurological recovery doesn’t have a time limit. Ten years after her stroke, she continues to work hard, try new challenges and build on what she can do.

Recently, we’ve introduced a drag weight into her sessions.

When the weight is on her affected leg, it provides resistance to help strengthen the leg. When it’s placed on her unaffected leg, it encourages Suzanne to load and use her affected side more.

The drag weight doesn’t just add resistance – it also provides proprioceptive feedback, giving Suzanne a tangible challenge to respond to and helping her feel where her body is in space.

It’s another example of how we can adapt rehabilitation to keep challenging the nervous system and help people continue to work towards their goals, even many years after a stroke. 🧠💙

What an amazing session, well done Suzanne 👏👏🌟

A great couple of days of learning and sharing knowledge at the Ottobock Spinal Cord Injury Days in Oxford and Bolton. 🧠

Claire was invited to present on the use of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) in managing foot drop following spinal cord injury, sharing PhysioFunction’s experience and practical insights with fellow professionals.

The events brought together physiotherapists, occupational therapists, case managers and orthotists from across both the NHS and private sectors, creating a fantastic opportunity to share ideas, discuss clinical challenges and learn from each other.

Thank you to Ottobock for inviting Claire to be part of these events – and for bringing professionals together to continue improving outcomes for people living with spinal cord injury. 💙
