Disability Positive We are Disability Positive. We help people with disability and long-term health conditions to live well. We provide you with services, opportunities and a voice.

We are a charity based in Cheshire and work mostly in the North West. The social model of disability is the starting point for everything we do and is the idea that people are not disabled by their condition, but by a world that doesn’t meet their needs. We have services to help you with everyday life, being part of your local community and looking after your wellbeing. We can offer advice, help with practical tasks and advocate for you in lots of situations. We listen and share your experiences to influence positive change in government policy. We know it matters, because we live with disability and long-term health conditions too. Visit www.disabilitypositive.org to find out more.

The cost of disability isn't always visible. 💷

From higher energy bills and specialist equipment to accessible transport and everyday essentials, disabled people can face additional costs that others might never have to consider.

And it's not just the big expenses. Sometimes, it's the little things that add up over time.

These extra costs can significantly affect people's finances, independence, and everyday choices.

We want to start a conversation and hear about your experiences. What's one hidden cost of disability you wish more people, especially politicians, understood?

Whether it's something you experience personally or something you've noticed when supporting someone else, we'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

By sharing experiences, we can help raise awareness and encourage greater understanding.

A little throwback to summer with our social groups...

Over the summer, our groups enjoyed plenty of days out, activities and new experiences together. But often, it's what happens around those activities that matters just as much - laughing, making friends, trying something new and feeling part of a group.

That sense of connection and belonging doesn't stop when summer ends.

Our Disability Positive social groups bring disabled children, young people and adults together throughout the year.

Here's to plenty more friendships, experiences, and smiles like these!

Today is World Mental Health Day. 💜

Struggling with mental health can happen to any of us, and it can be difficult to know how best to support someone.

You don't need to have the perfect words. You don't need to have all the answers, and you don't need to be an expert to show someone you care.

Sometimes it starts with the small things: Starting a conversation, listening, asking what would help and checking in from time to time.

For , our Mental Health First Aiders have shared some simple ways we can all help someone feel heard and supported.

Personal Budget, Personal Health Budget or Direct Payment - what’s the difference? 🤔

The terms are often used together, so it’s completely understandable if you’re not quite sure where one ends and another begins.

Here’s the simplest way to think about it:
💜 A Personal Budget is funding from your local council to meet your assessed care and support needs.

💚 A Personal Health Budget (PHB) is NHS funding to support your assessed health and wellbeing needs.

💛 A Direct Payment is one way you can receive and manage money from a Personal Budget or PHB, giving you more choice and control over how your care or support is arranged.

That could mean having more say over who supports you, how your support is delivered and when you receive it.

Still sounds a little confusing? You don’t have to work it all out alone.

Disability Positive can provide advice and support with everything from planning and managing your budget to recruiting Personal Assistants and understanding your responsibilities as an employer.

This week, the Government announced plans to expand its Jobs Guarantee to eligible young disabled people and young people with long-term health conditions, starting in April 2027. The scheme will be voluntary and will include paid employment alongside mentoring and tailored support.

But creating opportunities is only part of the picture. For a job to be genuinely accessible, disabled people also need workplaces that remove barriers and provide the right support - whether that's reasonable adjustments, accessible recruitment and communication, flexibility, supportive colleagues or being listened to.

So we want to hear from you: What needs to happen to make these jobs genuinely accessible? What would make the biggest difference to a young disabled person starting work? Share your thoughts in the comments.👇

Independent living doesn’t mean doing everything alone. 💜

It means having choice, control and the right support in place to live your life in the way that works for you.

At Disability Positive, we believe disabled people should be at the heart of decisions about their own lives - from the support they receive to how, where and with whom they spend their time.

Through our services, we support people to have greater choice, independence and control over their lives.

What is NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) - and could it help with the cost of your care?

NHS Continuing Healthcare is a package of care arranged and funded by the NHS for adults who have significant ongoing healthcare needs. It can be provided in your own home or in a care home.

But understanding CHC, eligibility and the assessment process can sometimes feel overwhelming.

At Disability Positive, our Advocacy Team can help you understand your options and support you through the CHC process.

You can also learn more about CHC, care costs, benefits, funding and the support available in our latest blog: https://zurl.co/Abtw2

How many different ways have you communicated with someone today?

Communication isn't one-size-fits-all. ‼️

For some people, it might be spoken language. For others, it could be BSL, written communication, AAC, or another form of communication that works for them.

For , our CEO Lynne - who is a proud Child Of Deaf Adults (CODA) and has used BSL all her life - is sharing an important reminder: the responsibility shouldn't always be on disabled people to adapt the way they communicate.

Creating inclusive communication starts with something simple: Ask people what works for them. Listen. And be prepared to adapt.

At Disability Positive, we work with individuals and organisations to help remove barriers and create more inclusive ways of communicating.

What does good, accessible communication mean to you?
