Do you question the power of breath?

If so, try this. First let your mouth open and relax, then exhale onto your palm like you are fogging up a mirror. Then switch your mouth to make it look like a bum hole ( I know! But the cue works!) then exhale like you are blowing through a straw.

Can you feel it? The change between warm and cool?

That is the power you hold in your breath!💥

When it comes to pregnancy and birth, your breath can make such a difference to the journey and experience. Want to find out more, whilst being part of a weekly movement class? Come and join us for bump yoga+, classes are held at Thorpe End Village Hall, on Thursdays between 6.15-7.45pm.

This week is baby loss awareness week and today is international pregnancy and infant loss Remembrance Day 🩷💙

I always question how best to post and acknowledge this day, so thought this year I would share this funky picture of me and my fitness instructor friends, who arranged an amazing fundraising event for EACH back when Nuffield’s was Greens! And yes, we hit front page! EACH helped me in ways I never knew I needed. Supporting me, providing bereavement counselling and enabling me to meet other mums and parents experiencing the same.

This year’s theme is ‘stepping stones’ and this, to me, perfectly describes the journey following loss. One day, one step at a time 👣

Tonight we watch flickering flames and remember, and whilst we remember we share all our love to each other ❤️🕯️❤️

I’ve been using this machine more recently, and it made me think about breech birth.

The less I use it, the less confident I feel, so I have to keep up with it otherwise I always program another exercise.

With breech presenting babies being recommend caesarean sections, how far away from feeling confident are midwives in supporting it v@ginally. And this isn’t only breech presenting babies but, physiological birth too. Yes, one midwife who works on a delivery suite that I spoke to couldn’t remember the last time she had witnessed a completely undisturbed, unmedicated, hands off physiological birth!

Now similarly to how I, and other PT’s, ensure our knowledge and confidence is kept high on different pieces of gym equipment, there are many midwives who do the same with breech presenting babies.

If you only think one way, or have only ever been advised one way, then that isn’t informed choice. Ask questions, question the answers and think about the environment you are choosing and how that is best going to support your choices.

If you would like to be part of a weekly pregnancy movement class, where we break down our conditioned thinking surrounding pregnancy and birth, then please come@and join us in bump yoga+

15 years ago, when I first qualified in pre/postnatal fitness, this would have been a thing, however fast forward to today and we now know so much more 🙏

Mums-to-be do not only tolerate exercise well, but it is incredibly beneficial for them AND their baby, and we are not only referencing walking and yoga but strength, resistance and more energetic exercise too.

If you now see a post that labels exercise as ‘safe’ or ‘unsafe’, see that as a sign the individual might need to update their qualification!

Yes there are relative and absolute contraindications, but these depends on you, and the health of you and your baby.

So if you want to carry on deadlifting, then please do. If it starts to feel uncomfortable, try widening the stance before stopping and see if that helps. If you want to carry on challenging the core (and yes that includes sit up’s ) then please do. It never is about the exercise but how you execute it, manage it and how it feels. There are always options and variations for you 😊

I teach two specific pregnancy classes in as well as personal training, whether that be regular or periodically. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

As we grow and learn, we arrive in adulthood with a clear understanding of pregnancy, or so we think!

If you answered 1) 40, 2) 10cm 3) a hat then that’s because it’s what we’ve learnt. Text books, tv and films, as well as listening and absorbing stories from those around us. But when you break down the black and white nature of how we see pregnancy and birth, we start to see clearly that it’s most definitely not black and white!

1️⃣ There is no specific week of pregnancy, one could argue it is when your baby is ready. However the textbook says it is between 37-42, not bang on 40 weeks. There has to be variability, no different to our monthly cycles all being varied in days and symptoms. But ask, how many women do you know who birthed in their 42nd week? Although I bet you’ve heard someone say their baby was late, describing a baby born between 40-42 weeks?

2️⃣ You need to be 10cm dilated to birth a baby. But what if your baby doesn’t need your cervix dilating that much? What if 8cm is good for you and them 🤷‍♀️ What if you’re told to go against every sensation in your body just because you’re not 10cm? (And please remember any internal examination needs your consent).

3️⃣ A hat is immediately placed on your baby to help regulate their temperature. But what if your baby is born full term and healthy, and in a warm environment? What about the gold standard way of having skin to skin with a blanket over you both? And what disturbance can a hat make to being able to smell your babies head for oxytocin flow, needed for bonding, attachment and breastfeeding?

Attending a weekly class, like bump yoga+ can help compliment antenatal education, as we can touch on these subjects frequently. This can help shift our internal thoughts, and feel more familiar and confident with questioning the not so black and white journey of pregnancy and birth ❤️

Do you find it hard to stop? To sit in a moment of stillness, listening to your breath and feeling your heart beat?

If so then bump yoga+ might just be what you need!

Birth is about being able to let go, to sit with patience and surrender to the journey of baby transitioning from womb to world 💕 So many of us in this modern world struggle with that, we are impatient and are used to rushing around getting tasks finished and attending various social gatherings.

Birth takes that and flips it on its side. If you struggle to stop and connect to your body on a normal day, then making this a focus during pregnancy might massively help on your birth giving day. I have spoken to countless women who energetically exerted themselves in early labour, only to look back in hindsight because they didn’t have enough energy in the tank for the later stages.

Everyone is different and everyone will navigate their birth giving day differently but being able to sit, let go and surrender is a gift that will be help you when the day comes to meet your baby. And yes, this still matters if birthing abdominally ❤️

Bump Yoga+ takes place on Thursday evenings at Thorpe End Village Hall in . Classes run in three weekly blocks between 6.15-7.45pm and include a mixture of yoga, Pilates and specific biomechanics and pelvic movement. These classes are not only about educating and movement but to disconnect from the outside world, press pause, release, relax and destress.
