Moxibustion, is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)-based therapeutic method, of burning dried mugwort (also known as "moxa") on particular acupuncture points, or certain body areas, to promote healing and balance the body's energy flow, and help drive out cold patches in the body. The Moxa is normally dried mugwort, which grows in various places around the world, including China and Europe.

At one time, the phrase "Acupuncture-Moxibustion" was used widely throughout Asia, as moxa was used so frequently that to use it appropriately, was an essential part of the proper application of acupuncture.

Moxibustion, when used in conjunction with acupuncture, improves the therapeutic "Yang" effect by warming the acupuncture points and encouraging improved blood and qi circulation. This therapy is especially useful in treating ailments like chronic pain, digestive issues, and irregular menstruation that are linked to cold and stagnation.

Moxibustion can ease pain, lower inflammation, and relax muscles by applying heat and local, topical herbal effects to specific areas.

Deeply penetrating the body, the warmth promotes a calming and restorative effect and this is coupled with the smoke and oils from the moxa reaching the skin to be absorbed. Moxibustion enhances the efficacy of acupuncture when used on the ends of needles to stimulate particular points and regulate energy flow. For example, moxibustion on the "BL67" point has shown significant success in treating conditions like breech pregnancies, by helping the body trigger the baby to turn.

When used properly and by a practitioner qualified in both modalities, moxibustion and acupuncture together represent the integrative tenets of TCM, providing safe, all-natural remedies for a variety of conditions while enhancing general health.

Acupuncture needles are different from other types of needles, such as those used in medical injections or blood draws, in several important ways.

They are extremely thin, typically ranging from 0.12 to 0.35 mm in diameter, much finer than hypodermic needles which can be 0.9mm or even 1.2mm in diameter. This fine structure minimizes any discomfort, and most people can't actually feel the needle itself at all once it's inserted, or even during insertion.

Acupuncture needles are solid, unlike the hollow hypodermic needles designed to inject or withdraw fluids, as their purpose is to stimulate specific points on the body rather than to withdraw blood, or introduce fluids into the muscles or bloodstream.

Made from stainless steel, acupuncture needles are also highly flexible, allowing them to bend slightly without breaking during use.

The tip of an acupuncture needle is tapered and polished, rather than sharp and cutting, as they are designed to gently separate tissue rather than cut it, reducing the risk of pain or tissue damage. These specialized features make them much more comfortable than you would expect and ideal for therapeutic use.

I am now a registered Map My Mole clinic as well as being MASCED (Melanoma and Skin Cancer Early Detection) trained which means you can have any worrying moles or skin lesions assessed, photographed, and sent directly through me to a GMC consultant dermatologist. Results come back really quickly.

It goes without saying that if you are worried about any skin changes, try to get in to see your GP asap. This is a service aimed at helping if you have a long wait and need peace of mind, or if you want a dermatologist’s second opinion.

My first time on a podcast!

Hearing Nicola's story, and hearing how she put her own career on hold in support of her partner's (who went on to be her husband), and then in support of her kids, will resonate with A LOT of women.

But hearing how she then reclaimed her career - her sense of self - as soon as the kids were a bit older, was equally joyous to hear.

Because there is no 'right' way to build a career - no 'right' timeline to follow - and successful relationships/successful marriages are all about 'partnership' (in my view, at least). Nicola took the early sacrifice for the greater good, and her husband later sacrificed and supported her for the greater good.

And Nicola is good; her whole persona exudes calmness and peace, which is why she's a great natural healer. She lives and breathes physical and energetic healing... which is why she really very good at it!

Listen to Nicola's story via your preferred podcast channel, or over on our YouTube channel, link 👉🏻 https://www.youtube.com//videos

I am in the process of becoming a registered MapMyMole practitioner. In order to get onto their books I need to complete two more (free) mole submissions. If any of my current patients are interested in having their moles reviewed by a UK consultant dermatologist, I can take and scan photos in clinic (using their supplied lens), and send them off for you.
The report comes back really quickly, and the dermatologist can refer straight to the hospital if needed.

It goes without saying that you should be going to the GP about any changes in moles, but this is a fast way of getting a diagnosis (or putting your mind at rest) if you can’t get a GP appointment.

Talk to me at your acupuncture appointment if interested.

It’s so lovely to have the sun back isn’t it? But we need to be aware of how it can affect our skin. I’ve just completed this Melanoma and Skin Cancer early detection course so that I know when an urgent GP/dermatology referral may be necessary.

Great news for my patients who want to give blood. Very thankful to my professional body, the Association of Acupuncture Clinicians for all of their hard work.
