Yesterday, Catherine Watkins attended Working After Brain Injury 2026, hosted by Irwin Mitchell.

Returning to work after a brain injury can be an important milestone in recovery, but the journey can bring many challenges, including fatigue, cognitive difficulties, changes in confidence and mental wellbeing. The event explored these challenges alongside vocational rehabilitation, workplace adjustments, employment rights and the support that can help people return to work.

A particularly valuable part of the day was hearing from people with lived experience. Their perspectives are vital in helping professionals understand the real-life challenges individuals face after a brain injury and how the right support can make a difference.

Catherine also enjoyed catching up with Jonathan Smallman-Davies and Laween Saadi from The Silverlining Charity.

Thank you to co-chairs Meg Fozzard and Leena Savjani from Irwin Mitchell for bringing together such an informative and thought-provoking event.

Last week, Andrew attended the Headway Conference in London, where this year’s theme was ‘Reintegration in Action: Community, Family, and the Future of Brain Injury Care’.

A key focus throughout the day was quality of life and the vital role that successful community reintegration can play in achieving positive outcomes following brain injury.
There was a great range of speakers and topics, with some of Andrew’s highlights including:

• Dr Benjamin Marram exploring fragile recovery after brain injury and how mood, anxiety, trauma and stress can interact with cognitive challenges such as fatigue and fluctuating capacity.

• Natalie Mackenzie discussing fatigue, routine and support, and how the often invisible effects of fatigue can impact community reintegration.

• Dr Caroline Bald considering inequality and access to support, including the impact of NHS pathways, local authority thresholds and wider social inequalities.

• Dr Mark Holloway looking at decision making and effective practice, including the many factors that can contribute to successful community reintegration following brain injury.

It was a valuable day of learning and an opportunity to hear different perspectives on how professionals can support people with brain injuries to achieve the best possible quality of life within their communities.

Our latest blog - Who is this for? Thinking about AI, case management and individual differences

Artificial intelligence comes up in almost every conversation about the future of healthcare and rehabilitation. New tools appear regularly, often presented as a way to save time, reduce administration and improve clinical effectiveness.

The wider discussion about AI in the media often focuses on what the technology might replace. That concern seems well founded. Some tasks can be done faster and more cheaply by a machine than by a person, and the early effects appear to be falling on junior roles, where much of what used to be somebody's first job seems to be the sort of thing these systems handle reasonably well. In health and social care, where clinical judgement and navigating complex systems are fundamental, the picture so far looks somewhat different. Recent work on AI and the NHS workforce suggests these technologies may change the shape of the work more than they reduce it, bringing new responsibilities around checking, validation and professional oversight.

Some of the team will be heading to London on Tuesday 13 October for the Working After Brain Injury event at Irwin Mitchell.

The event will explore an important part of brain injury rehabilitation: supporting people in returning to work and finding the right pathway forward.

Topics will include the hidden impact of brain injury in the workplace, vocational rehabilitation, workplace adjustments, mentoring and confidence building, employment rights, and the role employers can play in supporting a successful return to work.

The event will also consider alternative pathways and sources of support when returning to employment is not possible.

We are looking forward to hearing from the speakers, catching up with colleagues across the sector and bringing back learning that can support our work with clients.

Will you be attending? We would love to see you there. https://events.irwinmitchell.com/WorkingAfterBrainInjury2026

Read our latest client story - Rita’s journey: rebuilding independence after brain injury

Before her accident, Rita was a dedicated Police Community Support Officer. After completing a degree in International Tourism, she chose a career in policing, where she spent many years supporting her local community.

Everything changed in October 2021 when, while on duty, Rita was knocked from her police bicycle by a driver who had taken drugs. She sustained a severe traumatic brain injury and was admitted to intensive care before beginning many months of specialist rehabilitation.

Rita remained in hospital until March 2022 before moving to a specialist rehabilitation unit, where her rehabilitation continued. One of the most significant milestones in her recovery came in November 2022, when she returned home and began living independently again.
