Since 2022, we’ve supported families through the Independent Maternity Review (IMR) at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, led by Donna Ockenden, and now we’re sharing what we’ve learned.

Our new full-day online training is for anyone working in maternity care. It looks at how communication, culture and psychological safety can reduce trauma for families and support the staff caring for them.

This has been developed to support all professionals working across the maternity sector, whether this is midwifes, obstetricians, perinatal mental health workers, leaders, commissioners, or third sector support.

What would it mean for families if psychological support, delivered by psychotherapists, was built into maternity care from the very start?
The FPSS model gives hospital trusts a way to make immediate improvements to the psychological support families receive. It’s shaped by our work supporting harmed families through the Nottingham Ockenden Review since 2022.

Raising standards in maternity care.

Since 2022, we’ve supported hundreds of families involved in the Independent Maternity Review in Nottingham. Alongside our private therapy service, this work has helped us build a team with extensive experience in perinatal mental health and trauma-informed care.

We have used that experience to develop the FPSS model, designed to fit within the maternity pathway. It eases the pressure on midwives by providing mental health care from experienced, accredited psychotherapists, without affecting continuity of care.

The model can be implemented swiftly in any hospital trust, responding directly to the Ockenden Report’s recommendations that women are listened to and offered comprehensive psychological support before and after birth.

If you’re a commissioner, Director of Midwifery or maternity lead, we’d love to talk about how FPSS could help families in your area.

On Thursday 15 October at 7pm, families around the world will light a candle and leave it burning for at least an hour to remember babies who have died. As 7pm reaches each time zone, the candles form a wave of light.

You are welcome to join in at home, and to share a photo of your candle if you would like to. We will be lighting one too.

Today is World Mental Health Day, and this year's theme is Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change.

At FPSS, our first conversation with every family has always been about listening. Being heard, at your own pace and in your own words, can be an important first step. This is especially important after a difficult or traumatic experience.

This year, World Mental Health Day falls during Baby Loss Awareness Week, and we are holding in mind every parent and family living with the death of a baby.

If you would like some ideas for listening well to someone you care about, the Mental Health Foundation has a short guide on its website.

Alongside our private therapy practice, we continue to offer support through FPSS to families who have experienced maternity trauma and have been affected by the Ockenden Review in Nottingham. If you would like to talk to us, you can email [email protected].

If you need urgent support, call NHS 111 and select the mental health option, or Samaritans on 116 123.

Baby Loss Awareness Week begins today and runs until 15 October.

This week we are thinking of every parent and family whose baby has died, however long ago, and of everyone who loves and supports them.

Our therapists have worked closely with parents and families after the death of a baby. We understand that this grief can be complex, that it can surface again months or years later. It also affects whole families, affecting partners, grandparents and children too. Here in Nottingham and Derby, we are continuing to support families affected by the Ockenden Maternity Review (contact us at [email protected]) alongside our private service.

If you would like to talk to someone free of charge, The Lullaby Trust bereavement support helpline is on 0808 802 6868 (Monday to Friday 10am to 2pm, and 6pm to 10pm at weekends and on bank holidays).

If you need urgent support, call NHS 111 and select the mental health option, or Samaritans on 116 123.
