⚠️ Content warning: Non-fatal strangulation

It takes far less pressure than you might think to cause serious harm to the neck.

The human neck is particularly vulnerable. Very small amounts of pressure can restrict blood flow or breathing, potentially causing serious injury - and this can happen without leaving visible marks.

For context, the pressure involved in opening a pressurised drinks can is considerably greater than the pressure needed to affect blood flow in the neck.

That means non-fatal strangulation does not have to be forceful, leave bruises or cause someone to lose consciousness to be dangerous.

The effects can include:
• Difficulty breathing or swallowing
• Changes to voice
• Headaches or dizziness
• Confusion or memory problems
• Changes to vision or hearing
• Loss of consciousness
• Loss of bladder or bowel control
• Serious internal injury, including stroke

There is no safe way to strangle someone.

If you have experienced non-fatal strangulation, please seek medical advice, even if you feel okay and have no visible injuries.

Non-fatal strangulation can cause serious injuries, even when there are no visible marks. If it has occurred as part of a r**e or sexual assault, please contact Hope House SARC (0300 421 8400) for medical and practical support. If the incident occurred within the last four weeks, an assessment in A&E may also be required.

💜 If this has happened to you, you don't have to face it alone. GRASAC provides confidential, specialist support for survivors of sexual violence aged 13+ across Gloucestershire.

A higher proportion of full-time students were victims of sexual assault than those of any other occupation type as shown in ONS 2025 crime survey data.

Students can self-refer into SARCs – they do not need to go via the police or a GP. They can call 24/7 for an appointment. The team will listen and care for them in a space that is safe. They will talk through the different options, including the chance to have forensic evidence collected and safely stored if they wish.

Students can find their nearest SARC on the webpage: www.nhs.uk/SARCs

R**e culture is a term used to describe the ways in which sexual violence is normalized and perpetuated. There are so many things that contribute to our r**e culture. How can we chip away at it?

It’s important to note: individual survivors are not responsible for fighting r**e culture and we should not expect that of them. At the same time, we need survivor voices centered. The key is giving survivors that choice, and not judging them for their decision.

These are not the only things we can do, but here are some ways we can model a culture of consent and anti-sexual violence. How else have you fought r**e culture?
