Try to find something beautiful in today. 💝

Toxic Positivity and Masculinity dissected.

Sometimes I wish I didn’t see the obscure patterns. But about a decade ago I watched the discussions about toxic positivity try to push ALL positivity to one side. And now I’m seeing the same thing happen with the idea of toxic masculinity too.

Despite writing this in the description I will almost certainly have to make the same point in the comments. So here’s my standpoint in as few words as possible:

Toxic masculinity absolutely does exist. But not all masculinity is toxic.

Thank you for coming to my TEDTalk

This one feels very appropriate for my first post back during a period of struggling myself.

Reminding myself that certain “easy” things can feel much much harder whilst mental health is low is important.

It stops me from beating myself up about finding these things hard. And allows me to refocus on whatever I feel capable of that day.

This allows for me to do some things without guilt. Rather than the all or nothing that came before.

To quote Neil Buchanan from Art Attack… try it yourself!

Please don’t say “committed su***de”. It’s not helpful. It increases stigma. And it perpetuates the idea of su***de being a crime.

But if I’m asking you to be responsible with this statement then it’s only fair that I should be responsible in how I educate on it.

It’s a request. One human to another saying please consider making this small change. And unlike in the story I share here, I am asking in a hopefully respectful way.

Giving you the respect, that I would hope you give back to the mental health community. 💝

Neurodivergent Masking vs Energy Matching.

Both the same superpower. Yes I’m calling it a superpower because a neurodivergent being able to change to fit in around neurotypicals? That is absolutely a superpower power.

Where it gets messy is when you have to use that power all the time and you can never be the “real you”.

I did this all through my teens and twenties not knowing it was what I was doing. I felt I needed to be a different person for everyone around me. It made me get on with just about anyone but it was exhausting. It would also lead to me doing many things I would later regret just to match that energy.

As an adult I still have this ability. And now? I love it. But only because I don’t have to do it all the time. It’s my choice (mostly) and all those close to me know the real me underneath.

If I want to be around them completely unmasked I can. And if I want to just be alone and recharge I can do that too.

We should never be in a position where we are ashamed for this skill, we should instead be pushing back against a society that forces us to use it all the time. 💝

Is it better to try and fail than never try at all?

I think yes. On the whole. However what about if someone suffers with Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria? (RSD)

RSD is an intense emotional reaction to rejection in any form. Could be someone not liking your art. Could be missing out on a job interview.

Those who suffer with it will find “trying and failing” significantly harder than those without it. And for that person to try and fail could set them off for days, weeks or even longer.

So the person with RSD always has to weigh up situations more. And as such it will often make them more averse to even trying.

Ultimately you can’t avoid all failure. So the person will still have to take risks from time to time. And generally a persons relationship with this condition can be improved. Drop me a DM if you want to know how.

What a failed cry for help taught me.

In 2009 I put a cry for help on social media and no one responded.

17 years later I’m sharing the lesson I learned from that moment and how this could save so many people when they hit rock bottom.

Don’t get revenge on the wrong people!

Or better yet don’t bother yourself with the need for revenge. It will only eat you up!

Today is world su***de prevention day.

Every day should be the perfect day to check in on those you love. Or to reach out if you are the person in need.

17 years ago I put a needy “I need a hug” post on Facebook and no one responded.

What I should have done is messaged one person directly and said “I need you”

That’s a mistake I have learned from. When you reach out to “anyone” then “everyone” thinks that “someone” will respond and so “no-one” does.

Please look after yourself and those around you.

Today and every day. 💝

Have a break. Get to a new country. Take in the culture. Be inspired.

This trip has been wonderful but it’s been about family.

In fact I had to stop the youngest (2) from waking up the eldest (21) whilst trying to write this exact caption! 😂
