Muscles get the glory. Connective tissue does a lot of the graft. 🕸️
Your body works through connections. Fascia surrounds and links structures throughout the body, including muscles, nerves, blood vessels and organs.
Fascia- Supports structures and allows layers to glide
Tendons- Transfer muscle force to bone
Ligaments- Connect bones and help stabilise joints
Together, these tissues help support you and transmit the forces of everyday movement. (my.clevelandclinic.org)
So why can movement become restricted?
Injury, surgery and inflammation can leave scar changes or affect tissue glide. Prolonged immobility and altered movement patterns can also contribute to restriction. Feeling tight can involve several factors, including muscle activity and tissue changes. (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)
Ageing can change collagen organisation in both tendons and ligaments. Their structure changes over time, alongside the demands we place on them. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)
Two interesting research findings:
🔎 In a small study, nine men kept one leg completely unloaded. After 23 days, their knee-tendon stiffness fell by approximately 29%. Here, stiffness means resistance to stretching—a useful property when transmitting muscle force. (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)
🔎 Another study found approximately 20% less sliding deformation between lower-back fascial layers in people with persistent back pain. The study could not establish cause and effect. (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)
This is where treatment AND movement matter.
Hands-on treatment can help ease pain and improve function, giving movement a more comfortable starting point. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)
Regular mobility keeps us exploring our range. Progressive strengthening gives muscles and tendons a load to adapt to—research shows that appropriately prescribed loading can improve tendon mechanical properties. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)
At RMT, we assess the sore area, check the movement around it, treat, move and reassess.
Your body works together. We keep that bigger picture in mind. 💛
