Remembering Aberfan | 60 years
On 21 October, we remember the Aberfan disaster, a tragedy that forever changed the lives of families and the south Wales community of Aberfan.

The shock, pain and sorrow was felt across Wales and the UK, and reverberated across the world.

Sixty years have passed since that devastating moment at 9.13am in 1966, when 144 people, including 116 children, lost their lives. Behind every name was a life, a family, a friendship and a future that was taken far too soon.

The pain of that day is never forgotten regardless of the time which has now passed. The memories of those who died live on in the hearts of their families, within the community and across generations.

Today, we pause to remember everyone who lost their lives, to honour their memory and to stand in quiet solidarity with all those who continue to carry the loss.

Sixty years on, Aberfan will never be forgotten.

What does person-centred support look like? For Sarah, it looks like horses. 🐴

Through Ategi’s Supported Living service, Sarah volunteers at a stable with the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) and takes part in riding competitions, where she’s won numerous rosettes.

The horses bring her happiness and calm. They help her stay active, build her strength and spend time outdoors.

Nobody would write “rosettes” or “stable shifts” into a standard support plan. But for Sarah, they’re the heart of a meaningful life, and the support around her makes room for them.

To the commissioners and local authority colleagues who plan and fund support, we’d ask: are we designing around what people need, or around what matters to them?

When support starts with someone’s interests, ambitions and strengths, the outcomes go beyond care. They include wellbeing, connection and independence.

Because independence isn’t only about where someone lives or the support they receive. It’s about the life they’re able to lead.

🏡 What makes a good Shared Lives referral?

Shared Lives is about more than support. It's about belonging, building relationships, being part of everyday life and having the opportunity to grow in confidence and independence. 💛

For someone who could thrive in a family home, Shared Lives may offer a different way to get the support they need.

If you're a professional considering a referral, here are three questions to ask:

✔️ Could the person be supported safely in a family home?

✔️ Would they benefit from meaningful relationships and greater community connection?

✔️ Do we have the information needed to plan the right match?

Not sure? That's absolutely fine! Let's talk it over. An informal conversation can help you explore whether Shared Lives could be suitable before making a formal referral.

Let's work together to help people find the right support to live their lives their way.

💜 Shared Lives. A little more connection, a lot more possibility.

Shared Lives brings people together in a way that can make a real difference to everyone involved.

For the person receiving support, it can mean greater independence, new experiences, growing confidence and a place where they feel they truly belong.

For the Shared Lives carer, it can mean building a meaningful relationship, sharing everyday moments and seeing someone flourish as they discover what’s possible.

And for families and communities, it means stronger connections, greater understanding and the reassurance that people can live life their way, with the right support around them.

From sharing a meal or enjoying a favourite hobby to discovering new interests and achieving personal goals, it's often the everyday moments that mean the most. 💛

Could Shared Lives be your next chapter?

You don't need previous experience – just a willingness to share your home, your time and your life. Ategi will be there with guidance, training and ongoing support.

A lovely day of connection 💛

Ategi Shared Lives recently brought carers, the people we support and members of our team together at the beautiful Denbies W**e Estate, in .

With sunshine, good company, plenty of cake and lots of conversation, it was a chance to catch up, share experiences, celebrate achievements and make new connections.

Most of all, it was a lovely reminder of what makes Shared Lives so special: people, relationships and a sense of belonging.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the day such a success. We’re already looking forward to the next opportunity to come together. 💜

You don’t need to have worked in care to become a Shared Lives carer.

Steve is a great example.

After 27 years in aviation, Steve wanted to do something that could make a real difference to someone else’s life. He had no professional care experience, but he did have experience of opening his home, supporting people through difficult times and helping them build confidence and independence.

And Steve knows he doesn’t have to do it all on his own.

As part of becoming an Ategi Shared Lives carer, he has completed training in safeguarding, health and safety, mental capacity and financial guidance. He’s also open about the areas where he needs to learn more — and ready to keep learning with support from Ategi.

“I’m looking forward to developing a positive relationship with the person I’m supporting.”

Shared Lives isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about being willing to listen, learn and support someone to live their life, their way.

If you’ve ever thought “I don’t have the right experience”, Steve’s story might make you think again.

Shared Lives could be your next chapter.

Help protect the people around you this winter 💛

As the colder months arrive, getting your annual flu vaccination is one simple way to help protect yourself, the people you support and your colleagues.

Flu can be more serious for people who are vulnerable to illness. And having your vaccination can help reduce the risk of catching and spreading flu, while also helping to reduce the severity of symptoms if you do become unwell.

Book your flu vaccination as soon as you can.

A small step can make a big difference – helping us look after ourselves, each other and the people who rely on our support.

And there’s something in it for you too. 💜

Refer a friend who becomes an approved Shared Lives carer and you could receive £500.

It’s our way of saying thank you for helping us find more amazing people who can make a real difference.

A new chapter for learning disability support in Wales 💜

The has published its new Learning Disability Transformation Programme, alongside an updated Quality Statement setting out its vision for improving services and support for people with a learning disability.

We welcome this renewed commitment. There are some really important ambitions here – helping people have more choice, independence and opportunities, and making sure support works better for people and their communities.

The vision is an important first step.

We look forward to seeing it develop into practical action and positive changes that make a real difference to people’s everyday lives.

At Ategi, we’ll continue doing our part: listening to the people we support, working with families, carers and partners, and finding ways to create more opportunities for people to live life their way.

There’s a lot to do. But this is a fresh opportunity to make a real difference – and that’s something we’re ready for.

When children grow up and fly the family nest, life can suddenly feel a little different.

For Lorna, that change brought something unexpected: space.

Space in her home. Space in her everyday life. And space in her heart.

Rather than seeing an empty room, Lorna saw an open door – and discovered Shared Lives.

Opening her home to someone else has brought new meaning to the ordinary moments of everyday life. The conversations, the laughter, the small achievements and the quiet moments of simply being together.

For Lorna, it's those small moments that make it all worthwhile.

“Even when the small achievements that we achieve in here together, it makes me feel like, you know what? This is so well worth it.”

Shared Lives isn't about having all the answers. It's about having something to share – your time, your home, your experience and your everyday life.

Could there be room in your life for someone else?
