Mouth Cancer Action Month in the UK takes place from 1st to 30th November. Organised by the Oral Health Foundation, the campaign raises awareness of mouth cancer and shares the important message of being mouthaware. This means knowing how to spot mouth cancer early and knowing where to go when we see something out of the ordinary. It also means reducing risk by cutting down on the things that cause mouth cancer. More information can be found on the Oral Health Foundation’s website: https://www.dentalhealth.org/mouthcancer

Movember runs from 1st November to 30th November, raising funds and awareness for men’s mental health, su***de prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Since 2003, Movember has challenged the status quo, shaking up men’s health research and transforming the way health services reach and support men. Every November men in the UK grow a moustache as part of the campaign which promotes conversations, helping to get men to talk about their health and wellbeing. Here’s a challenge for all you men out there – send us a photo of your moustache at the end of the month and one of the team from the Mary How Trust will choose their favourite.

Did you know that cigarette smoking causes roughly 80% to 90% of lung cancer cases and deaths? Not starting, or quitting at any age is the most effective way to lower your risk. Avoiding second-hand smoke is important too, as inhaling smoke from other people’s ci******es or ci**rs raises the risk, even if you have never smoked yourself. As you know we at the Mary How Trust are always very keen on healthy diets and staying active, and both supports your overall immune system and long-term lung health.

Lung Cancer Awareness Month takes place annually throughout November. The focus is on educating the public about risks and how important early detection is, especially as lung cancer may not always have symptoms early on. If you are experiencing any symptoms then it is important that you get them checked by your GP as soon as possible. More information about the signs and symptoms of lung cancer can be found on the Macmillan Cancer Support website.

Gastric Cancer Awareness Month or Stomach Cancer Awareness Month as it is also known, is observed every November and the focus areas are early detection and recognising persistent symptoms. The risk of developing stomach cancer increases as we get older and it is more common in men than in women. Common symptoms include heartburn or indigestion that doesn’t go away, loss of appetite and weight loss. However, these can also be symptoms of other common stomach problems such as a virus or stomach ulcer so it is important to speak with your GP as soon as possible.

World Vegan Day is celebrated on 1st November and is a day to raise awareness and celebrate the vegan lifestyle. There are many different reasons people choose to lead a vegan lifestyle but the most common is to protect animals. World Vegan Day is an opportunity to learn more about veganism, how it can benefit you, animals, and the environment. For those of you that would like to try something new, here is a quick, tasty recipe for a vegan jambalaya: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/vegan-jambalaya

Halloween takes place today and as it’s a Saturday, we can all enjoy the celebrations, trick-or-treating and parties without worrying about school or work the next morning – hurrah! The origins of Halloween can be traced back to the ancient festival of Samhain, where people lit bonfires and wore costumes to ward off roaming spirits as winter began. It also marks the eve of All Saints’ Day, starting the Christian observance of Allhallowtide, to remember the dead. As one of my favourite holidays, I will enjoy spending the day decorating the house with all things spooky!

We will be opening our new clinic in the Godalming area in mid-November, where we will soon be offering health and wellbeing scans and appointments. Our second site, The Wharf, will allow us to increase the number of people that we can help by looking for early signs of cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Located in Lower Eashing, next to the A3, 8 miles from Guildford and 2 miles from Godalming train station. There is also free parking for those that wish to come by car. We look forward to seeing you there.

Can you help?

The Mary How Trust URGENTLY need office furniture for our new charity health screening clinic!

Are you refurbishing your offices, relocating, or replacing office furniture? If so, we would love to hear from you! after months of planning and building work, The Mary How Trust is almost ready to open our brand-new health screening clinic at The Wharf, near Godalming, Surrey.

Our builders are due to hand over the premises on 9 November, and we are incredibly excited to be taking this next step in the charity's journey, providing potentially life-saving health screenings to even more people.

However, we've hit a last-minute hurdle, and I'm hoping that some of you may be able to help!

A company that had very kindly offered to donate office furniture following its refurbishment is unfortunately no longer able to do so, leaving us with a rather urgent gap to fill!

We are desperately looking for:

Office desks with pedestal drawer units (built in or free standing)

Good-quality office chairs

Staff room and/or breakout furniture

As an independent charity, every penny we save on furniture is money that can go towards delivering our vital health screening services.

Ideally, we are hoping to find businesses willing to donate furniture they no longer need. However, we do have a very limited budget and would be happy to discuss purchasing suitable items at a charitable price.

Even if you can't help directly, a share, a tag or an introduction to someone who might be able to would mean the world to us.

We have worked so hard to get to this point, and we are now on the final stretch. It would be wonderful if our local business community could help us over the finishing line!

Please message me directly, or email [email protected] if you can help.

Thank you so much for supporting The Mary How Trust.

World Stroke Day takes place every year on 29th October and focuses on raising awareness about stroke prevention, recognising the warning signs and the critical need for immediate medical care. A stroke happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off, killing brain cells. The effect of a stroke depends on where it takes place in the brain and how big the damaged area is. A high percentage of strokes are preventable by taking care of core risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and smoking.
