I have made this mistake and now I am more careful with my language.

We talk about being a 'safe person' or creating 'safe spaces', but what do we actually mean?

Just because we want to be safe doesn't mean that is how someone feels in our company.

It's a huge assumption and can feel like a pressure.

When a nervous system is under stress, the sense of safety doesn't come easily.

So I work on what I DO - not just what I SAY.

Showing up to be:
πŸ‘πŸΌ Consistent
πŸ‘πŸΌ Predictable
πŸ‘πŸΌ Nurturing
πŸ‘πŸΌ Neuro-Affirming
πŸ‘πŸΌ Non-Judgemental
πŸ‘πŸΌ Calm

So, rather than calling my room a 'safe place', I sometimes use 'consistent space' with the hope that safety will follow in time.

πŸ‘πŸΌ Check out this Year 4 pupil giving their experience of Drawing and Talking a big thumbs up!

πŸ‘πŸ‘¬ Working through big feelings can feel pretty challenging so it helps to feel connected and relaxed as it builds that important sense of emotional safety we all strive for.

🏫 My sessions run weekly during the school day.

✏️ No artistic skills needed! We work creatively in gentle, playful and child-led sessions to share feelings that are not easily expressed using words alone. My approach is both neuro-affiriming and trauma-informed.

πŸ“ž Want to help a young person you know but not sure where to turn? Let's talk! I am currently taking bookings for January.

All enquiries and calls are free and confidential.

πŸ‘€ Keeping my eyes peeled for witches, wizards and other archetypes in our Drawing and Talkihg therapeutic sessions!

Know what an archetype is? They are universal themes and symbols that connect us through our shared human experience, transcending language, culture, time and faith.

We see archetypes woven throughout art, literature, myths and dreams, where what we think is just an object or a character holds a deeper significance and can be interpreted as a symbolic representation of something else.

For example, we may repeatedly see the Mother, a Hero figure, Water, a Tree of Life or the Sun.

Why is this important? All these things evoke an emotional response and are ways to express ourselves and connect deeply with others without the need for complex language.

Useful to bear in mind when the young children I support find it hard to articulate their fears, worries and wishes cognitively, we can consider their use of archetypes to express their internal world through storytelling and art.

So this Halloween season, I will be embracing the Wizard, the Joker, the Witch and the Moon and feeling my way into the stories we share in sessions for their deeper emotional significance.

Happy Halloween. πŸ§™β€β™€οΈ

Using the sand box to create stories can be a more accessible means of self-expression for some children than using pencil and paper.

It is: Multi-sensory Tactile, supporting gross and fine motor development Movement based Playful Suitable for younger children Accessible to children who are non verbal

If your child doesn't like the feel of sand, that's OK. We can use other mediums in which to dig, shape, tunnel and bury.

I am now taking bookings for the new term so pop me a DM if you have a child in mind who needs help with emotional regulation, self-expression, confidence and attachment building.

I am so grateful every time I get a new enquiry because of the kind words of someone I have worked with previously.

Let's keep supporting each other with small acts of kindness and gratitude and by sharing the best recommendations we have with those around us.

A valuable part of my job is the signposting I do to other local services, charities, groups and experts, because I will always try to help you to build a network around your family so you know you are not alone in the challenges you face.

*Remember* Every time you recommend a friend to Beam Wellbeing and they make a booking, you get a free cuppa on me! β˜•οΈ

Feedback from a Year 5 pupil who has found value in sharing their emotional world, safe in the knowledge that their privacy will be respected.

How good does it feel to be surrounded by trusted friends?

How would that change your child's experience of school?

My group work sessions are only Β£15 per pupil per week.

If you are a senco, inclusion manager or family worker let's talk about how we can implement early emotional support for the children in your care.

Boosting communication Developing trust Busting myths and problem solving their own experiences together Learning there is no 'one way' of thinking Listening deeply Having fun!

Pop me a message for a free, chat in confidence about how my sessions can help your child to build friendships and create a more positive school experience.

Work in school? Let's talk about my packages for schools where I can offer tailored combinations of group and 1:1 work for target pupils.

🌻 Summer's here and today I visited the local Sunflower farm between Reading and Basingstoke.

I thoroughly recommend it. They have tractor rides, a play area, lots of space to run through the fields and end with an ice cream. We even got one for Pebble!

Remember your sececturs so you can snip 5 sunflowers included with every adult ticket. βœ‚οΈ

Free Online Event with author, illustrator and neurodivergent advocate Eliza Fricker.

This thought-provoking webinar exploring what "struggle" really looks like for neurodivergent and why so many of their experiences are misunderstood.

Drawing on themes from her powerful new book Could Try Harder, Eliza will invite us to rethink our assumptions about effort, behaviour and expectations, offering a more compassionate understanding of children's experiences.
