Our Creative Projects Coordinator David chooses Princess Constance Magogo kaDinuzulu for his Black History Month Spotlight: A remarkable South African female musician, composer and Zulu princess who helped preserve generations of traditional Zulu music.
At a time when women faced significant restrictions on public performance, she challenged convention by becoming a singer, composer and master of the ugubhu, a traditional musical bow.
Her performances were recorded by Hugh Tracey in 1939, bringing her music to wider audiences. She went on to gain international recognition, not only for her own compositions but for her knowledge of Zulu musical traditions.
She is credited with passing that knowledge on and ensuring that traditional music continued to be heard and celebrated.
In 2003, she was posthumously awarded South Africa's Order of Ikhamanga in Gold in recognition of her outstanding contribution to music and culture.
