Yes, you need to shave before your laser appointment. No, that is not a contradiction.

The laser is looking for the follicle under your skin, not the hair sitting on top of it. Hair above the surface just absorbs energy that should be going somewhere more useful, and it can singe, which is neither pleasant nor helpful.

So shave the area the day before or the morning of. If you are booked in first thing, the evening before is the one you want.

What you do not want is to shave on your way out the door before your appointment. The skin is still sensitive at that point, and the treatment will feel more uncomfortable than it needs to.

What you must not do is wax, pluck or thread it. That takes the root out, and the root is the whole thing we are trying to treat. There is then nothing there for us to work on.

And if you arrive unshaven we may have to cancel your appointment. We do send you a reminder email before every appointment so you never forget.

Everything else you need to know comes via email after every appointment.

You will spend around 17 hours shaving your legs this year.

10 minutes, twice a week, every week. It does not feel like anything at the time. It adds up to more than 2 working days.

Then there is the bit nobody counts. Checking before you get dressed. Deciding against a skirt. The razor you forgot to pack. Shaving in a hurry on the morning of something and catching your ankle.

6 laser treatments is around 5 hours in total. Not 5 hours a year. 5 hours, and then you are largely done with it.

We are not going to pretend you will never pick up a razor again. But by your 3rd or 4th treatment you are getting most weeks hair free without doing anything, and that is the part people actually notice.

Why can we not treat everything in 1 go? Because most of your hair is not there yet.

At any one moment only about a fifth of the hair in an area is actually growing. The rest is dormant, sitting under the skin, waiting its turn. The laser can only destroy a follicle that is actively growing, so one treatment only ever catches the ones that happen to be awake that day.

Leave the right gap, another batch wakes up, and we get those. Do that 6 times and you have caught most of them.

The gap is different depending on the area. Face sits at around 4 to 6 weeks. Underarms and bikini run 6 to 8 weeks. Legs are the longest, 6 to 10 weeks apart.

That timing is not us being fussy. Come too early or too late and it affects your final result, so we will book your next treatment in before you leave rather than leaving you to remember.

We did not pick 6. It is what the machine is designed around.
