Allergies can appear at any stage in life and adult onset allergies are more common than you might think.

Symptoms can appear suddenly after years of eating a food with no problems at all, or reactions can develop gradually over time.

Common signs that you might be developing an allergy include:
• Itching.
• Hives.
• Swelling.
• Stomach ache.
• Wheezing.
• Mouth itching.

Sometimes you might find these symptoms are worse when you're stressed, experiencing hormonal changes, ill or have other conditions likey hayfever, asthma or eczema.

Because symptoms can sometimes be mild or inconsistent at first, many people dismiss them for years or assume they are 'just sensitive' to certain foods.
But ongoing or changing symptoms are always worth taking seriously.

Understanding what is causing reactions, and what support or treatment options may help, can make everyday life feel much more manageable 🩵

Allergy tests can be incredibly helpful, but they are only one part of the picture.

🧪A positive test does not always mean someone will react if they eat that food. It can sometimes show sensitisation, which means the immune system has noticed the food, but that is not the same as having symptoms in real life.

This is why understanding the whole picture matters so much. Take note of these details to discuss with a specialist:
• What happened during the reaction?
• How quickly did symptoms appear?
• How much of the food was eaten?
• Has the food been tolerated before?
• Has it happened more than once?

Blood tests and skin prick tests can support diagnosis, but they do not replace careful clinical judgement.

For many families, the most helpful thing is not just getting a result, but understanding what that result actually means for everyday life.
