HOMEMADE SAUERKRAUT RECIPE

πŸ₯¬ Homemade Sauerkraut β€” Just TWO Ingredients!

After my last post about fermented foods, here's one of the easiest ways to have a go at fermenting at home.

Homemade sauerkraut.

You really don't need a cupboard full of ingredients.

πŸ₯¬ Cabbage
πŸ§‚ Himalayan pink salt

That's it!

My recipe uses a ratio of approximately 2 teaspoons of salt for every 450g (1lb) of cabbage.

HOW TO MAKE IT

Finely slice your cabbage and place it into a large clean glass or stainless-steel bowl.

Add the salt and start squeezing and massaging the cabbage with your hands. As you work it, the cabbage will begin releasing liquid to create its own brine.

Transfer everything into a clean glass mason jar, packing the cabbage down firmly.

The really important bit?

Keep the cabbage underneath the brine.

You can use a fermentation weight to help keep it submerged.

Cover the jar with clean muslin or a tea towel secured with an elastic band and check it daily to make sure the cabbage remains below the brine.

🌑️ My recipe recommends fermenting at around 18–22Β°C.

You can start tasting it after about one week. The longer you leave it, the stronger the flavour becomes. My recipe recommends around three weeks for a fuller fermentation, before transferring it to the fridge to slow the process.

And that's homemade sauerkraut! πŸ₯¬πŸ’š

πŸ“– This recipe comes from my book Transform Your Gut: Restore Your Health, which is packed with gut-friendly recipes and practical ways to support your digestive health.

Available in hardback or on Kindle from Amazon.

πŸ’š SAVE this post so you can have a go at making your own.

πŸ’¬ Have you ever fermented anything at home β€” or does the thought of leaving cabbage in a jar for three weeks terrify you? πŸ˜‚

FERMENTED FOODS

πŸ₯¬ What Do Sauerkraut, Kimchi, Kefir & Live Yoghurt Have in Common?

They're all fermented foods β€” and humans have been fermenting food for thousands of years.

But why have they become such a talking point when it comes to gut health and the microbiome?

During fermentation, microorganisms transform components within the food. Depending on the food and how it's produced, the finished product may contain live microorganisms as well as compounds created during fermentation.

Some fermented foods also give us another way to add greater plant variety to our diets.

A few to experiment with include:

πŸ₯¬ Sauerkraut
🌢️ Kimchi
πŸ₯› Kefir
πŸ₯£ Live natural yoghurt
🍲 Miso
πŸ«™ Traditionally fermented vegetables

But β€” and this is important β€” more isn't always better.

If your digestive system is particularly sensitive or you're struggling with significant bloating, suddenly adding large amounts of fermented food may leave you feeling uncomfortable.

Start with a small amount and see how your body responds.

One of the things I encourage my clients to think about is not constantly:

"What else do I need to remove?"

but:

"What beneficial foods can I start ADDING?" πŸ’š

And next I'm going to show you how ridiculously simple it can be to make one of my favourites at home...

πŸ₯¬ Homemade Sauerkraut β€” just TWO ingredients.

HOW YOU EAT MATTERS

🍽️ You Could Be Eating All the "Right" Foods… But HOW Are You Eating Them?

Plenty of vegetables βœ”οΈ
Protein βœ”οΈ
Healthy fats βœ”οΈ
Lots of fibre βœ”οΈ
Different coloured plants βœ”οΈ

But you're eating it in seven minutes while answering emails and scrolling through your phone. 😬

We spend so much time talking about WHAT we eat that we can forget something really important:

HOW we eat matters too.

Digestion actually starts before that first mouthful. Seeing, smelling and thinking about food begins preparing the digestive system, and chewing then starts physically breaking down your meal.

Your nervous system matters too.

If you're constantly eating while rushing, working or feeling stressed, try changing the environment around your meals before changing your diet again.

πŸ’š Sit down
πŸ’š Put your phone away
πŸ’š Take a few slow breaths
πŸ’š Chew thoroughly
πŸ’š Slow down between mouthfuls
πŸ’š Give your meal your attention

SIT DOWN β†’ SLOW DOWN β†’ BREATHE β†’ CHEW β†’ REST & DIGEST

Sometimes supporting your digestion isn't about finding another food to eliminate.

It can start with changing the way you eat the food that's already on your plate.

πŸ’¬ Be truthful β€” are you a slow eater, or is your meal gone before everyone else has properly started? πŸ˜„

EFT & EMOTIONAL EATING

🍫 Are You Hungry… Or Are You Trying to Change How You Feel?

You've had a stressful day.

You walk through the door and before you know it, you're reaching for the chocolate, biscuits, crisps or w**e.

But you're not actually hungry.

Sound familiar?

Emotional eating isn't simply a lack of willpower.

Food can become associated with comfort, reward, distraction, boredom or a way of coping when we're stressed, anxious, overwhelmed or upset.

And that's why another diet doesn't necessarily address what's actually driving the behaviour.

This is where EFT – Emotional Freedom Technique, also known as tapping – can be really interesting.

EFT combines tapping on specific acupressure points with focusing on the thoughts, feelings or emotions you're experiencing.

Rather than only asking:

"How do I stop myself eating this?"

we can start exploring:

"What happened just before I wanted it?"
"What am I feeling?"
"What do I actually need right now?"

πŸ’š It's about becoming curious about the pattern rather than criticising yourself for having it.

I offer one-to-one EFT sessions at Mi Vida Inner Health in Edgeley, Stockport.

πŸ₯₯ Breakfast Chia Pudding – A Gut-Loving Start to the Day

Looking for a breakfast that’s simple, delicious and packed with gut-friendly fibre?

This Breakfast Chia Pudding is one of the recipes from my book Transform Your Gut: Restore Your Health and takes just minutes to prepare.

Chia seeds are a great source of fibre, while banana adds natural sweetness and cinnamon gives it that lovely warming flavour.

Serves 2

πŸ₯₯ You’ll need:

2 bananas
2 tsp cinnamon
4 tbsp chia seeds
2 scoops Zinobiotic fibre blend
250ml coconut milk

For the Low FODMAP version, use unripe bananas, omit the Zinobiotic and choose a coconut milk without added inulin.

To make it:

Blend the bananas and coconut milk until smooth. Add the cinnamon and Zinobiotic, if using, and blend again briefly.

Divide between two bowls, stir 2 tbsp chia seeds into each, then leave in the fridge until set. Warm gently before serving.

🍫 Fancy a change? Add 1–2 tbsp cacao powder for a chocolate version, swap the cinnamon for ginger, or add a little fresh orange juice or zest.

πŸ’š Gut-friendly food doesn't need to be complicated.

You'll find this recipe alongside lots more gut-friendly inspiration in my book:

πŸ’© How Healthy Is Your Poo?

Yes, we’re talking poo! πŸ˜„

We spend a lot of time talking about gut health, but one of the simplest ways to get clues about what’s happening with your digestion is to actually look in the toilet.

The Bristol Stool Chart categorises bowel movements into seven types, from hard pellets through to completely watery stools.

Generally, Types 3 and 4 are considered the sweet spot β€” well formed, comfortable and easy to pass.

But there's more to a healthy bowel movement than how it looks.

Ask yourself:

πŸ’© Am I going regularly?
πŸ’© Is it easy to pass without straining?
πŸ’© Do I feel properly emptied afterwards?
πŸ’© Has my usual pattern changed?
πŸ’© Am I regularly experiencing very hard or loose stools?

And here's something many people don't realise:

You can poo every day and STILL be constipated.

If you're passing small or hard stools, straining, or regularly feeling as though you haven't completely emptied your bowels, constipation could still be part of the picture.

Simple changes can help support healthier bowel movements:

πŸ’§ Drink enough water
πŸ₯¦ Eat a diverse range of plant foods and fibre
πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ Move your body every day
🚽 Try a toilet stool to improve your position
⏰ Give yourself time and establish a regular toilet routine
πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ Don't forget the role stress can play in digestion

Your poo isn't something to be embarrassed about β€” it's information. πŸ’š

πŸ’¬ Which Bristol Stool Type are you most often β€” 1 to 7? You can always DM me if you'd rather not announce it to Instagram! πŸ˜‚

πŸ’š Your Gut Symptoms Are Trying to Tell You Something

Bloating. Constipation. Reflux. Gas. Food reactions. Irregular bowel movements.

It can be tempting to treat each symptom separately β€” something for the bloating, something to help you go to the toilet, another supplement for digestion…

But what if your symptoms are actually clues?

After more than a decade working with digestive health, one of the biggest things I’ve learned is that two people can have exactly the same symptom for completely different reasons.

Your bloating might be connected to constipation.

Someone else's could be linked to fermentation or SIBO.

Another person's digestive symptoms may become significantly worse during periods of stress.

And for some women, changes around perimenopause and menopause can add another layer to the picture.

This is why I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to gut health.

I want to understand your story β€” your symptoms, bowel habits, diet, lifestyle, health history, stress and what was happening around the time things started to change.

Then, where appropriate, we can use functional testing to investigate further rather than guessing.

πŸ’š Don't just silence the symptom. Get curious about why it's there.

That's where real, personalised gut-health support begins.

πŸ’¨ Why Am I Bloated Every Time I Eat?

Do you wake up feeling relatively comfortable, only to find that by lunchtime or evening your stomach feels bloated, tight or uncomfortably full?

You're definitely not alone β€” but if bloating is happening regularly after eating, it's worth asking why.

Persistent bloating can have many different causes, including:

πŸ’š Constipation or incomplete bowel emptying
πŸ’š Food intolerances or sensitivities
πŸ’š Changes in your gut bacteria
πŸ’š Excessive fermentation
πŸ’š SIBO
πŸ’š Stress and the gut-brain connection
πŸ’š Hormonal changes, including perimenopause and menopause

And this is why simply cutting out more and more foods isn't always the answer.

When I work with clients experiencing persistent bloating, we look at the whole picture β€” your diet, bowel habits, symptoms, health history, stress and lifestyle.

Where appropriate, we can also use functional testing to investigate what may be happening within the digestive system.

The goal is to understand WHY you're bloated, rather than continually trying to manage the symptoms. πŸ’š

πŸ“ Based in Edgeley, Stockport, with online consultations also available.
