Thursday Thoughs Time!!🤔

Lets be honest Who else is running purely on the Halloween sweets your supposed to give out on Saturday lol 🍬🎃

Navigating school holidays when your child has complex needs is a whole different level of parenting. It's not a break; it's often a 24/7 juggling act without the structure of school. We know what it's like to manage the sensory overload, the unpredictable schedule changes, and the sheer emotional and physical fatigue behind closed doors.

We built Choice so families wouldn't have to figure it all out in the dark like we did for so many years with Delilah. We wanted a place where you could get the support you need without having to fight for it for a decade and a half.

Hang in there. The sugar rushes are coming, the routines are broken, but we're almost through the week together.

Happy ! Let’s talk about outdoor smart security, like Ring or Blink cameras. 🍁📷

When your living arrangements mean a child or young person is sleeping on a different floor—like when we used to have Delilah sleep downstairs—anxiety can go through the roof. Even though you know they're safe, it can sometimes feel like they are a million miles away while the rest of the house is upstairs. One of our main, heart-pounding worries used to be: If someone broke in, how fast could I actually get down to her?

Having cameras and smart monitors set up completely changed our night-time anxiety levels:

Instant Reassurance: Being able to quickly check in from your phone in the middle of the night without having to tiptoe down the stairs and risk waking them.

Perimeter Peace of Mind: Knowing you have eyes on your property boundaries brings an extra layer of security when your household is split across floors.

We’ve linked some of the user-friendly camera setups that our family relies on for peace of mind and they work with Alexas and google home systems.

Do you use outdoor or indoor cameras for reassurance? Let us know your thoughts! ☕

We’re welcoming Rituals Revived – Modern Apothecary to Choice for a relaxed afternoon of individual tarot readings.

Each person will receive their own 10–15 minute tarot reading from Rituals Revived.

Fancy a half-term outing with a bit of autumn magic, without the jump scares? 🍂

WWT Washington’s SUPER Natural event runs until Sunday 1 November. The centre describes it as a scare-free nature adventure designed with younger children in mind.

There are willow-wand and marshland-potion activities daily from 1–2pm, plus a self-led trail. Pond dipping is listed for Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October, 10.30–11.30am, if discovering tiny underwater creatures sounds like your family’s sort of fun.

Most activities are included in standard admission; this isn’t a free-entry event, and some extras cost more. Check the organiser’s page for prices, activity details and any changes before setting off:

As parent carers, we know that ‘family-friendly’ doesn’t answer every question. If you need to check access, facilities or what a session involves, contact the centre before booking so you can decide what suits your family.

Half-term is here for many families — and if you’re looking at the week ahead wondering how to make it work for everyone, pop the kettle on. ☕🍂

We’re parent carers too. A break from school can bring lovely moments together, but changes to familiar routines can take some working out. You might be looking forward to a slower pace, juggling different needs, or feeling a bit of both.

Our school-holiday resource page is there to give you a few practical ideas. The guide was written for the summer holidays, but its suggestions around routines, sensory needs and looking after yourself can be useful during shorter breaks too. You’ll also find downloadable resources for making your own Now and Next boards. 💗

There’s no pressure to fill every day. A familiar activity, a quieter plan or leaving room to change your mind might suit your family best.

Have a look and take what helps:

Sunday check-in, parent carers. How has your weekend looked? ☕🍂

A big day out? A familiar walk? Or a day at home where everyone could do their own thing?

It’s easy to look at everyone else’s photos and feel there’s a more exciting version of family life we should be managing. But a good weekend doesn’t have to be packed with plans or look impressive in a photograph.

Sometimes it’s finding an activity everyone actually enjoys. Sometimes it’s changing the plan halfway through. And sometimes the best bit is a completely ordinary moment that nobody else would think to photograph. 💗

We’re parent carers too, and we know that what works for one household might look very different in another. There’s room for all of those versions here.

What was one thing your family enjoyed this weekend — big, small or wonderfully uneventful? We’d love to hear it.

💗 “𝗪𝗲’𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗱… 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁.”

But what happens while you're waiting?

Waiting for an assessment.
Waiting for an appointment.
Waiting for someone to listen.
Waiting for answers that might help you understand your child's needs.

For so many parent carers, the waiting is one of the hardest parts of the journey.

And the reality is, families are often left feeling like they have to navigate it all on their own.

That's why we've created our NEW online course:

🌸 𝗪𝗛𝗜𝗟𝗘 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗪𝗔𝗜𝗧…
A Parent Carer's Guide to Navigating the Unknown.

This course isn't about telling you to be patient, think positively or just hang in there.

It's about giving you something useful NOW, rather than expecting you to wait for a diagnosis before you can begin understanding your child's needs or accessing support.

💻 Across five modules, we'll explore:

🩷 Understanding the waiting process and the emotional impact of uncertainty.

💙 Recognising and supporting your child's needs without waiting for a diagnosis.

🩷 Practical tools to prepare for appointments, keep records and communicate concerns.

💙 Exploring your options, finding support and making room for ordinary family life.

🩷 Moving forward, even when the answers aren't straightforward.

There are interactive activities, practical resources and information you can return to whenever you need them.

✨𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒏 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒆, 𝒂𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒑𝒂𝒄𝒆, 𝒊𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆.

Whether you've just started asking questions or you've been waiting for years, this course has been created with you in mind.

Because a waiting list shouldn't mean putting support on hold.

And parent carers deserve more than being told to wait.

Head to Choice Wellbeing Service for more information or to request access to the course.

You might be waiting for answers. But you shouldn't have to wait for support. 💗

We’ve nearly made it to Friday eve, team. 🙌🍂

Getting the news that your child is different—and facing a different, sometimes shortened, life expectancy—is a seismic shock. It changes everything, forever. When we were dealing with Delilah’s complex medical needs early on, nobody told us it was okay to grieve the life we thought we'd have, or that our other children's worlds were changing too.

There was zero ongoing mental health support for parents processing that reality, and little guidance on how to support siblings. Choice exists to change that story for Sunderland families, offering advice and mental health help from the earliest possible moment.

If you're carrying that heavy weight tonight, We want you to know it is okay to lower the bar. It is okay to cancel plans, put on comfy PJs, Stick Netflix on and protect your peace. The caring role doesn't switch off, but you need to recharge.

So Breathe.
