This Black History Month, we're remembering Mary Seacole.

Born in Jamaica in 1805, she travelled to the Crimea at her own expense after her offer to help was turned down through official channels. Near Balaclava she set up the "British Hotel", giving food, comfort and care to soldiers, and nursed the wounded close to the front line.

Her story still speaks to anyone thinking about a career in care: compassion, resilience, and refusing to let barriers stop you from helping people.

UK care has always been shaped by people from many backgrounds. If you're starting out, our Level 3 Award in Health and Social Care includes a full unit on equality, diversity and rights, so you understand how to work inclusively from day one.

Worried about the speaking part of Functional Skills English? Let's take the mystery out of it.

The Speaking, Listening and Communicating (SLC) assessment isn't a written paper. You give a short presentation, answer a few questions, then join a group discussion with 3 to 5 other learners on Microsoft Teams.

It's pass or fail, and you book it separately from your reading and writing exams.

On our Functional Skills English Level 2 course, you don't go in blind. You get video lessons, marked mock exams, and 1:1 live tutor support until you pass. You can choose from three exam boards, sit your exams from home, and a free resit is included if you need it.

Does presenting make you nervous or excited?

If the thought of taking blood makes your palms sweat, you're not alone. Most people on our phlebotomy courses feel exactly the same before they start.

Here's how our Manchester Phlebotomy Part One day builds your confidence, one layer at a time:

First, the theory, so you understand every step.
Then a demonstration from a GMC-registered doctor.
Then practice on a manikin and a silicone arm.
Then, with your trainer right beside you, a real draw with a consenting fellow learner.

By the time you reach that last step, your hands already know what to do.

Nervous isn't the same as not ready.

Before you start learning BSL, here's something that surprises almost everyone: it isn't English on the hands. It's a complete language with its own grammar.

πŸ‘‹ Facial expression is part of the grammar. Raised eyebrows can turn a statement into a question.
πŸ“ Space matters. You can "place" people and things around you, then refer back to them.
πŸ”€ The fingerspelling alphabet uses two hands.
πŸ” Word order often differs from spoken English.

That's why Signature BSL Level 1 is taught live by a tutor rather than through videos alone. You practise, get feedback, and build confidence with real conversations about meeting people, numbers, weather, transport and directions.

No experience needed, and the official exam is included.

What surprised you most the first time you saw BSL? πŸ‘‡

Qualified in massage and thinking about specialising? Here's what a day can look like for a mobile lymphatic drainage therapist:

8:30 Check the diary, pack fresh linen and supplies
9:30 First client. Consultation first: health changes, contraindications, goals
10:30 A light, rhythmic MLD sequence
12:00 Notes and aftercare advice
14:00 Two more clients: one facial drainage, one full body
17:30 Rebookings and admin

Flexible, varied work. And it all starts with the skills you learn on our one-day Birmingham MLD course: how the lymphatic system works, the hand techniques, full sequences and safe consultation.

You'll need a Swedish or Level 3 body massage certificate to join, and you leave with a CPD & IPHM-accredited certificate the same day.

Mobile or clinic: which would you choose?

"I'm new to care. Is a Level 3 qualification too much for me?"

It's one of the questions we're asked most, so here's an honest answer: no, it isn't.

The Level 3 Award in Health and Social Care is designed with beginners in mind. There's no work placement and no formal exam. You study online at your own pace and complete written assignments, with 1:1 support from your assessor over Zoom.

The three units cover:
β€’ Equality, diversity and rights
β€’ Human growth and development
β€’ Safeguarding

You can start from age 16, and most learners finish in 6 to 12 months, around work and family. It's awarded by NCFE CACHE and carries UCAS points too.

Got another question about starting in care? Ask it below and we'll answer.

It's Global Handwashing Day. If you're thinking about training as a phlebotomist, this is one of the first habits you'll learn.

Infection control before any blood draw:

β˜‘οΈ Hand hygiene before touching the patient
β˜‘οΈ Fresh gloves for every patient
β˜‘οΈ Clean the site and let it dry fully
β˜‘οΈ Don't re-touch the vein after cleaning
β˜‘οΈ Sharps straight into the bin, no recapping
β˜‘οΈ Hand hygiene again after removing gloves

On our Bristol Phlebotomy Part One course at Filwood Community Centre, infection control to professional standards is covered in the theory, then practised hands-on on the day under the eye of an expert senior phlebotomist.

It's a one-day course, open to beginners, with free parking on site.
