BIG NEWS in AI & healthcare and an important development for anyone working in clinical safety.

The UK Government has accepted all 44 recommendations from the National Commission into the Regulation of AI in Healthcare, while the MHRA has opened Phase 3 of its AI Airlock, focusing on post-market surveillance of AI-enabled medical devices.

One of the important themes is the move towards lifecycle regulation and monitoring.

For Clinical Safety Officers, this is particularly relevant.

Clinical safety isn’t something that ends when a technology is deployed. As AI-enabled technologies are introduced into real healthcare environments, their performance can be affected by factors including deployment context, clinical workflows, data quality and how people interact with them.

Understanding how risks are identified, monitored and managed throughout the lifecycle of digital health technology is therefore becoming an increasingly important part of the clinical safety landscape.

More than 12,000 people contributed to the Commission’s work, including patients, the public, healthcare professionals, healthcare leaders, industry and technology developers.

For current and aspiring CSOs, developments like this are a reminder of just how quickly digital health is evolving and why continuing to build our knowledge matters.

At the CSO Training Academy, our aim is to develop confident, capable Clinical Safety Officers who understand not only the standards, but how clinical safety works in the real world.

We’ll be following closely as these recommendations move towards implementation.

Clinical safety doesn’t stand still. Neither should our knowledge.

“Who actually owns the clinical risk…. the developer or the organisation deploying the technology?”

It’s a question that sparked a really useful discussion during one of our recent Clinical Safety Officer Practitioner Training sessions at CSO Training Academy.

We had NHS professionals, developers, suppliers and deployers learning together and that mix of experience made for a great conversation.

Because understanding DCB0129 and DCB0160 is one thing.

Understanding what those responsibilities look like when you’re actually developing or deploying digital health technology is another.

We talked about where responsibilities sit, what we really mean when we describe something as clinically safe, and why clinical safety works best when developers, deployers and end users are communicating early.

One point kept coming through;

You need the right people in the room at the right time.

And that’s a big part of what our training is designed to do.

We don’t just work through the standards.

We create space to ask questions, challenge assumptions and explore how clinical safety applies to the situations our delegates are actually dealing with.

If you’re responsible for developing, deploying or assuring digital health technology, our Clinical Safety Officer Practitioner Training is designed to help you turn the standards into practical understanding you can take back into your organisation.

Hello October

As we start a new month at CSO Training Academy, we’ve been reflecting on how much the clinical safety community has grown this year.

258 delegates trained in 2026 SO FAR.

And every training room brings a different perspective.

GPs and doctors. Nurses. Pharmacists. Paramedics. Allied health professionals. Digital health teams. People developing technology and people deploying it in practice.

That mix matters.

Because clinical safety isn’t something that sits with one profession, one department or one stage of a digital health project.

Some of the most valuable conversations in our Clinical Safety Officer Practitioner Training happen when people with different responsibilities come together and start asking;

→ Where does our responsibility begin and end?
→ What does good clinical risk management look like in practice?
→ How do DCB0129 and DCB0160 work together?
→ What changes when AI becomes part of the picture?

Reaching 258 delegates trained so far this year is a milestone we’re incredibly proud of.

But the number only tells part of the story.

Behind it is a growing community of professionals developing the knowledge and confidence to make digital healthcare safer.

And as October begins, we’ve got plenty more to share.

More conversations from the training room. More practical clinical safety insights. More on AI and emerging technology. And more opportunities to connect with the growing CSO community.

Here’s to a great October and to the next 258.

Building a digital health product? There’s one question you need to answer earlier than you might think.

Is your software actually a medical device?

It sounds straightforward.

Until you start hearing;

SaMD. Medical device classification. MHRA. UK MDR. CE marking. UKCA. ISO 13485. IEC 62304.

Clinical evaluation…

And suddenly you’re trying to work out what applies to your product, what doesn’t, and what you actually need to know.

If you’re a Digital Health or HealthTech founder, product manager, software developer, clinician, Clinical Safety Officer or AI/ML engineer working in healthcare, you don’t necessarily need to become a regulatory specialist.

But you do need enough understanding to know the questions you should be asking.

That’s exactly why we created the Medical Device Regulation & Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) Awareness Course.

It gives you a practical introduction to the UK and EU medical device regulatory landscape, including;

Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) and SiMD
AI / Machine Learning as a Medical Device (AIaMD)

UK Medical Devices Regulations and MHRA requirements

Medical device classification

UKCA and CE marking pathways

ISO 13485, ISO 14971, IEC 62304 and IEC 62366

Clinical evaluation and post-market surveillance
And how medical device regulation intersects with DCB0129, DCB0160, DTAC, cybersecurity and UK GDPR.

Because the time to understand whether medical device regulation affects your product isn’t after you’ve built it.

It’s while you’re making the decisions that shape it.

DID YOU KNOW?

Clinical safety is not a document completed at the end of a digital health project.

NHS England’s Level 3 Digital Clinical Safety Practitioner curriculum guidance demonstrates the breadth of knowledge required to manage clinical risk effectively.

It covers the responsibilities of a Clinical Safety Officer, clinical risk management throughout the product lifecycle, hazard assessment, safety documentation, safety cases, testing evidence, incident management, ongoing monitoring and decommissioning.

The message for healthcare organisations and digital health innovators is clear, clinical safety must be considered from the beginning and maintained throughout the life of a digital product.

Having people within your organisation who understand clinical risk management, DCB0129 and DCB0160 supports stronger processes, clearer accountability and safer digital health products.

At CSO Training Academy, our live, one-day Clinical Safety Officer Practitioner Training provides practical coverage of DCB0129 and DCB0160.

The training also includes:;
✓ 16 CPD points
✓ Continued access to course resources
✓ Access to the dedicated CSO Training Academy app
✓ Free access to our AI in Clinical Safety course

Standard course price: £499
Dedicated NHS staff rate: £469

Visit www.csotrainingacademy.com to view upcoming dates and book your place.

Training builds internal knowledge. For organisations requiring direct support with clinical risk management, DCB0129 or DCB0160 documentation, clinical safety cases or DTAC readiness, our colleagues at DigiSafe can provide specialist support.

COULD YOU SPOT THE CLINICAL SAFETY RISK?

During our latest Clinical Safety Officer training, candidates assessed a simulated digital health system that was not ready for deployment.

They identified a severity-5 hazard - the system could allow a clinician to prescribe medication to a patient with a documented allergy, with no audit trail for the override.

The supplier and deployer teams reached the same conclusion;

No green light whatsoever.

This practical exercise brought DCB0129 and DCB0160 to life, with GPs, pharmacy professionals and supplier/developer perspectives contributing to the discussion.

That is what our training is about, giving people the confidence to question, challenge and apply clinical safety standards in real situations.

The next live online training will take place on Wednesday 30th September 2026 at 9:30am–4:00pm GMT
