The masks we wear…
Maybe it’s our job title, or being mother, daughter, wife.
Halloween and Samhain are a time when historically we have enjoyed wearing a costume or ‘guising’- adopting another identity just for a while.
In pregnancy and postpartum we often experience a fairly monumental identity shift. Yet modern living means we are surrounded online with a narrative of identities we may feel we need to adopt. For example, we may feel we need to wear the ‘masks’ of “blooming and glowing” through pregnancy, “loving every minute” of maternity leave and in postpartum bounce we have to navigate ‘bounce back’ back culture in a greatly changed body. You can see how these things truly can cause us to suffer when our personal reality behind these masks can be quite different.
This week in pregnancy and postnatal yoga this week we gently explored how this links with yogic philosophy and the teachings around Asmita, one of the 5 kleshas (interestingly described as the roots of suffering.)
Because when we begin to tie our self worth and identities to these labels or masks, we lose sight of our true inner self.
If you’re a mama in the thick of it I’d love for you to know that your overwhelm, anxiety, changed body, stretch marks and exhaustion do not define you, they are not you. Even though matrescence may crack us wide open and leave us changed in many ways. Your true inner self is always there underneath it all - the beautiful loving, kind, and intelligent person you always have been.
I see you mama. You are amazing. The spaces I hold for you are always ones where you can let those masks slip, and where we can honour each others journey in a kind, honest, supportive way 🫶💗
