One of the biggest skin concerns I see in clinic isn’t actually acne, pigmentation or ageing.
It’s skin barrier impairment.
And the reason this matters is because your skin barrier is your skin’s protective shield. It helps keep water inside the skin while protecting it from irritants, allergens, pollution and environmental stressors.
When that barrier becomes compromised, the skin can become dry, tight, flaky, red, sensitive, reactive or uncomfortable. You may also notice that products you used to tolerate suddenly start to sting or irritate your skin.
So what causes it?
Often, it’s not one single thing. It can be over-exfoliation, using too many active ingredients, aggressive treatments, inappropriate skincare, excessive cleansing, environmental exposure, stress or simply not giving the skin enough time to recover.
And this is where I think we sometimes get skincare backwards.
When the skin is struggling, the answer isn’t always to add another active ingredient or another treatment.
Sometimes, the most advanced thing you can do for your skin is stop, simplify and repair.
As a skin expert, I always want to understand why the skin is behaving the way it is before deciding what treatment or products it needs.
Because healthy skin isn’t about having the most products.
It’s about having a strong, functioning skin barrier and a personalised approach that supports your skin long-term. HealthySkin SkinConsultation AdvancedSkincare SkinConfidence SkinConcerns SkinTherapist SkinClinic SkinRejuvenation BarrierRepair SmartSkinExpert ThetfordBeauty NorfolkSkinClinic .uk
