Ever had a patient with arm symptoms that just don't fit a pattern?

Thoracic outlet syndrome takes an average of 5 to 7 years to diagnose....

đź“Ś Here are some helpful clues:

1) Arm symptoms with no dermatomal pattern, that come and go with position, especially overhead → Consider thoracic outlet syndrome

2) Strange extras: dizziness, sweating, headaches, a tight feeling at the front of the neck → Consider the brachial plexus.

3) Failed carpal tunnel surgery or carpal tunnel tests that don't add up → Consider looking higher up

4) Swelling, colour change, or a radial pulse that disappears in position → Consider a vascular presentation and refer on sooner

5) Wasting or motor deficit → Consider referring on for further investigation

The thing with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is that there isn't one test that confirms it, it's the whole picture that counts.
