For more than 25 years, Safespaces has been working to support people with complex needs through thoughtfully designed, specialist products.

Over that time, we’ve learned just how important it is to listen. Every individual is different and the experiences of families, occupational therapists and healthcare professionals help us understand what matters in everyday life.

Their insight continues to inform how we design and develop our products.

For us, 25+ years of experience isn’t simply a milestone. It represents knowledge built over time, a willingness to keep learning and a commitment to continually improving what we do.

25+ years of experience. Still listening. Still learning. Still innovating.

ADHD UK states that 2.6m people have ADHD in the UK.

With October being ADHD Awareness Month, we’re exploring how individuals can meet their night time needs when a conventional beds fail.

ADHD symptoms don’t switch off at 8pm - Some individuals may need movement, deep pressure or sensory input to feel safe enough to sleep. Hard wooden bedframes, traditional blankets, or dark, quiet surroundings can trigger self injurious behaviours

Soft-flexing, high-sided safe beds provide proprioceptive feedback and soft, impact-reducing boundaries to support individuals with ADHD.

How do we balance a child’s fundamental right to safety with the realities of funding? 💭

Research paper 'Health versus Housing Authorities' written by -sharp explores the different routes of funding, discussing DFGs, ICES, CHC and Charity Funding. It highlights that safety is not a luxury, it is the foundation from which children can sleep, develop, participate and thrive.

October is Sensory Awareness month

Sensory processing differences can have a significant impact on a person’s ability to function and participate in everyday life, whether at home, school, the workplace, or within the wider community.

For some individuals, these differences can be debilitating. For those looking to support them, understanding what is happening and finding the right strategies and support can feel challenging.

At Safespaces, we’ve put together a detailed article series designed to help families and the professionals navigate the sensory world. ‘Understanding Our Sensory System’ explores sensory processing in an accessible, practical way, helping readers build their understanding and consider how sensory differences may be affecting everyday experiences.

The full article series will be available through the Safespaces Academy so sign up now and watch this space 👇

We’ve passed our annual ISO 13485 audit! 🎉

We’re delighted to have retained our ISO 13485:2016 certification, the internationally recognised quality management standard for medical device manufacturing.

Maintaining this certification reflects our ongoing commitment to quality, safety and continuous improvement across our products, processes and the way we work.

A special thank you to Amy, Andy and Jane for your months of preparation, diligence and guidance in getting us into such excellent shape for the audit. Your hard work and attention to detail are greatly appreciated!

Well done to everyone involved in maintaining the high standards that underpin everything we do at Safespaces.

Yesterday we were in Sheffield attending the Foundations Champions Roadshow!

The day was a great success, with Kate Sheehan and Sharon Baillie on stand answering questions and having insightful conversations with the many delegates there.

Kate gave our 'The Client Centred Toolbox' presentation discussing the different adaptations in an OTs toolkit.

Didn't get the chance to see it? Our Managing Director, Alastair Demick will be presenting at the London DFG next week!

World Cerebral Palsy Day 💚

At Safespaces, we know that for many people with cerebral palsy, the challenges don’t stop when the lights go out.

Many children and adults with cerebral palsy spend their waking hours in wheelchairs or specialist seating, with carefully considered postural support. Yet, at night, they may have little or no support to help them maintain a safe and comfortable position.

Severe spasticity and dystonia can cause involuntary muscle contractions, spasms and increased muscle tone can be painful, uncomfortable and disruptive to sleep affecting not only rest, but also quality of life. As Occupational Therapists, you play an important role in evaluating movement, positioning, postural support and moving and handling needs to help people with cerebral palsy sleep comfortably without injuring themselves.

How often does night-time positioning form part of your initial assessment for individuals with cerebral palsy?
