WHY DOES MY BRAIN CREATE NIGHTMARES?

Dreaming remains one of neuroscience’s more fascinating areas and we still don’t have one complete explanation for why we dream.

But nightmares can become more frequent during periods of stress, anxiety or following trauma.

For some people trauma-related nightmares replay aspects of an experience.

For others the dream is completely different but carries the same emotional themes.

Trapped.

Chased.

Powerless.

Unable to escape.

Nightmares can leave the body responding as though something has actually happened.

Heart racing.

Sweating.

Disorientated.

If you wake from one try orienting yourself to the present.

Where am I?

What date is it?

What can I see?

What can I touch?

Your body may need a little help recognising:

The threat was in the dream. I’m here now.

Why Does Music Affect Me So Much?

One song.

Three seconds.

And suddenly you’re seventeen again.

Music is incredibly powerful because it interacts with networks involved in emotion, reward, prediction and autobiographical memory.

That’s why songs become attached to people.

Relationships.

Funerals.

Holidays.

Break-ups.

Entire periods of our lives.

Music can also support regulation.

Sometimes we need calming music.

Sometimes we need something loud enough to meet us where we are first.

Sometimes we need the song that lets us cry.

Your playlist probably contains an emotional autobiography you didn’t consciously write.

So here’s tonight’s question:

Which song can instantly transport you to another time in your life?

WHY CAN A SMELL BRING BACK AN ENTIRE MEMORY?

A perfume.

Hospital disinfectant.

Cigarette smoke.

A particular aftershave.

Suddenly you’re somewhere else.

Smell has particularly direct connections with brain regions involved in emotion and memory including the amygdala and hippocampal system.

That’s one reason scent can evoke extraordinarily vivid autobiographical memories.

Sometimes they’re beautiful.

Sometimes they’re painful.

Trauma triggers can work in similar ways.

Your conscious brain might not immediately recognise the connection.

Your nervous system does.

This is why somebody can suddenly feel anxious before they understand what reminded them.

The body reacts.

The story catches up afterwards.

Triggers aren’t evidence that you’re back there.

They’re evidence that your brain remembers.

And remembering isn’t the same as reliving.

This is now. That was then.

Why Am I Waiting for Something Bad to Happen?

Things are good.

Suspiciously good.

So naturally your brain says:

“Something terrible is coming.”

For people accustomed to instability calm can feel strangely vulnerable.

At least when something is wrong you know what you’re dealing with.

When everything is okay there’s nothing to solve.

Nothing to scan.

Nothing to prepare for.

And that can feel unfamiliar.

Hypervigilance doesn’t always switch off simply because the environment becomes safer.

The brain needs repeated evidence.

Nothing bad happening today doesn’t guarantee nothing bad will ever happen.

That’s not the goal.

The goal is learning:

“I don’t need to experience tomorrow’s possible pain today.”

You’re allowed to enjoy a good chapter without constantly reading ahead looking for the plot twist.

WHY DO I RUIN THINGS WHEN THEY’RE GOING WELL?

New relationship going beautifully?

Suddenly you want to run.

Opportunity you’ve wanted for years?

Now you’re procrastinating.

Life finally feels calm?

You start waiting for disaster.

We call this self-sabotage as though one part of you has deliberately decided to destroy your happiness.

Often something more compassionate is happening.

The new situation carries uncertainty.

Success creates expectations.

Closeness creates vulnerability.

Calm feels unfamiliar.

So protective patterns appear.

Avoid.

Withdraw.

Procrastinate.

Find the flaw.

Return to something familiar.

Instead of asking:

“Why am I ruining this?”

Try:

“What feels dangerous about allowing this to go well?”

That’s often a much more interesting conversation.

What’s Underneath Anger?

Anger often gets treated as the problem emotion.

But anger can be incredibly informative.

Sometimes underneath it is:

Hurt.

Fear.

Rejection.

Shame.

Powerlessness.

Grief.

Exhaustion.

A crossed boundary.

That doesn’t mean anger is always hiding another emotion.

Sometimes you’re simply angry.

And anger itself isn’t bad.

It’s what we do with it that matters.

The next time anger arrives try asking:

“What is my anger protecting or pointing towards?”

Perhaps:

“That wasn’t okay.”

“I feel ignored.”

“I’m frightened.”

“I’ve had enough.”

Understanding anger doesn’t mean excusing harmful behaviour.

It means listening to the message without allowing the emotion to choose every action.

Why Am I So Irritable?

WHY IS EVERYONE ANNOYING ME TODAY?

Sometimes irritability isn’t really about the person chewing too loudly.

Your window of tolerance may simply be very small.

Poor sleep.

Stress.

Pain.

Sensory overload.

Hunger.

Hormonal changes.

Too many demands.

Too little time alone.

When capacity decreases ordinary things begin feeling extraordinary.

Then we blame ourselves:

“Why am I being such a horrible person?”

Try checking your resources before your character.

Have I eaten?

Slept?

Had any quiet?

Moved my body?

Been under unusual pressure?

Am I carrying something emotionally?

Irritability is sometimes information.

Your nervous system might be telling you:

“I don’t have much left.”

Listen before it has to shout.

Why Can’t I Sleep When I’m Exhausted?

Exhausted all day.

Wide awake the second your head hits the pillow.

How?

Sleep requires more than tiredness.

It also requires the nervous system to relinquish enough vigilance to allow sleep to happen.

If you’ve spent the day stressed then your body can be physically exhausted while your brain remains activated.

Then comes the second problem:

“I HAVE to sleep.”

You check the clock.

Calculate how many hours are left.

Become anxious about tomorrow.

And now bed itself becomes associated with performance.

Sleep isn’t something we can force.

Often we need to create the conditions in which it can arrive.

Darkness.

Routine.

Reduced stimulation.

A cooler environment.

And perhaps most importantly…

Less fighting with the fact that you’re currently awake.

WHY DOES EVERYTHING FEEL WORSE AT NIGHT?

All day you’ve been functioning.

Working.

Parenting.

Talking.

Doing.

Then the house becomes quiet.

And your brain decides it’s time for the annual general meeting of every problem you’ve ever had.

There are fewer distractions.

You’re tired.

Cognitive control isn’t at its best.

And thoughts that felt manageable at 2pm can feel enormous at 2am.

One important rule:

Don’t make major life decisions in the middle of an exhausted nervous system spiral.

Write the thought down.

Remind yourself:

“This deserves attention tomorrow.”

Then return to rest rather than trying to solve your entire existence from underneath a duvet.

Night-time thoughts can feel incredibly convincing.

Morning often provides perspective.

Menopause, S*x and Relationships

Menopause can enter the relationship too.

Changes in desire.

Sleep disruption.

Vaginal dryness or discomfort.

Body confidence.

Irritability.

Fatigue.

Mood changes.

And partners who sometimes have absolutely no idea what is happening.

Silence can turn physical and emotional changes into relationship problems remarkably quickly.

“They don’t want me anymore.”

“They don’t understand.”

“We never have sex.”

“Everything I do irritates her.”

Sometimes nobody is the enemy.

Something significant is happening biologically and both people need language for it.

S*x and intimacy may need to change.

That doesn’t mean they have to disappear.

Communication becomes incredibly important.

So does appropriate medical support when symptoms are troublesome.

Relationships adapt throughout life.

This is another chapter to understand rather than silently endure.
