Your skin has its own biological clock. ⏰

And understanding it might change the way you think about skincare.

Just like the rest of your body, your skin follows a 24-hour rhythm. This influences processes such as cell renewal, barrier function and how your skin responds to environmental stress.

Research has shown that skin permeability and water loss can fluctuate throughout the day and night. Poor sleep has also been associated with slower skin barrier recovery.

But here’s what’s important.

You don’t need a complicated routine or a cupboard full of products to support healthy skin.

A gentle cleanser, a suitable moisturiser, targeted ingredients where needed and daily broad-spectrum SPF 50+ are a sensible foundation.

And while your skin has its own biological clock, the evidence that precisely timing most skincare products improves results is still developing.

The right ingredients, appropriate use and consistency matter far more than following the latest skincare trend.

“Korean Botox peptide serum” — really? 🤔

I came across an advert recently claiming that a peptide serum could do what Botox does.

Naturally, that caught my attention!

Now, I’m not dismissing peptides. Some have promising evidence in skincare and may help improve the appearance of fine lines.

But there’s a big difference between improving skin appearance and reducing muscle movement.

A peptide serum is not Botox in a bottle.

And just because a product makes impressive scientific-sounding claims doesn’t mean the evidence supports them.

I’m all for effective skincare. I’m just not a fan of misleading marketing.

Have you seen these adverts? Would you believe the claims?

I had a conversation with my six-year-old grandson today about birthdays.

I reminded him that Nanna is 59 next month — and 60 next year. 😳

“Grandad’s already 60,” he helpfully reminded me.

“Yes,” I said. “We’re getting old, aren’t we?”

He agreed.

So, obviously, I had to ask…

“But Nanna doesn’t look old, does she?”

There was a pause.

You could almost see his six-year-old brain trying to work out the safest possible answer. 😂

Then he looked at me and said:

“Well… you’ve just got a few wrinkles, Nanna.”

And actually, I thought that was rather lovely.

Because I do have wrinkles. I’m nearly 59.

I don’t want to look 30. And I certainly don’t believe that ageing is something we need to “fix”.

For me, aesthetics has always been about looking well, looking like yourself and feeling comfortable in the skin you’re in — not trying to erase every sign that you’ve lived.

So yes.

Nanna has a few wrinkles.

And I think I’ll keep some of them. 💜

Can you really rebuild collagen after 40?

Yes — your skin can still make new collagen.

But not everything marketed as “collagen boosting” has good evidence behind it.

Some skincare ingredients can support collagen production. Some treatments can stimulate new collagen formation. And protecting the collagen you already have matters too.

The key is choosing the right approach for your skin, your goals and what the evidence actually supports.

Your DNA is being damaged every single day.

That sounds alarming — but DNA damage is a normal part of being alive.

Our cells have sophisticated systems for detecting and repairing that damage. But some escapes repair and, over time, genetic damage can accumulate.

This is known as genomic instability — one of the recognised Hallmarks of Ageing.

And it matters for more than how we look.

Our skin is exposed to DNA-damaging influences such as UV radiation, while throughout the body our cells are also dealing with damage arising from normal metabolism, oxidative stress and environmental exposures.

We can’t prevent every bit of DNA damage, and we certainly can’t stop ageing.

But we can reduce some avoidable damage and support healthier ageing through the rather unglamorous things that consistently come back to us: UV protection, not smoking, regular movement, a varied nutritious diet and good sleep.

No miracle hacks. No promises to “reverse” ageing.

Just understanding what is happening inside our cells — and what the evidence suggests we can actually influence.

Did you know your DNA was being damaged every day?

Changing your mind isn’t inconsistency when the evidence changes.

For nearly three years, I said no to exosomes. The theory was interesting and the marketing was everywhere—but the clinical evidence wasn’t enough for me.

Since then, small human studies have begun reporting encouraging improvements in skin texture, hydration, elasticity, uneven pigmentation and fine lines.

That was enough for me to look again—but product quality matters. Source, processing, purification, stability and supporting documentation all formed part of my decision.

I now use exosome-supported microneedling carefully and selectively within Regenerate, the advanced tier of my Maverick Glow Series.

Would you like to know whether it could be suitable for your skin?

Comment EXOSOMES below and I’ll send you more information.

Gold standard. Most powerful. Deeper pe*******on. 🔬

They sound impressive — but do they actually tell us which LED treatment is better?

LED light therapy has a growing evidence base in skin rejuvenation. Red and near-infrared light have been studied for their effects on cellular activity, inflammation and tissue repair, with research showing potential improvements in collagen production, skin texture and signs of photoageing.

But when it comes to LED, more isn’t automatically better.

Wavelength matters. The amount of light reaching the skin matters. Treatment time and the total dose matter. And the right parameters depend on what we’re actually trying to achieve.

That’s why claims such as “most powerful”, “deepest penetrating” or “gold standard” shouldn’t be used in isolation to decide that one device or treatment must be superior.

I use LED in clinic as part of a number of my skin treatments because I think it can be a really useful addition to a well-planned skin programme — but, as always, I want to understand the evidence behind what I’m using, rather than simply the marketing around it.

Save this if you’re considering LED treatment or a home LED device — and share it with a friend who’s been wondering whether all those LED claims really mean “better”.

That PRX-PLUS glow ✨

This patient is part of my Maverick Glow Regenerate programme, with treatments every six weeks as part of an ongoing plan to improve and maintain her skin quality.

Her programme includes a combination of treatments, with PRX-PLUS being a more recent addition. This was her second PRX-PLUS treatment, six weeks after her first.

These photographs show her skin before and after her most recent treatment — and I think the glow speaks for itself. ✨

She’s been really pleased with how her skin is progressing — and so am I.

Maverick Glow isn’t about relying on one treatment to do everything. Treatments are selected and rotated according to the skin and what we’re trying to achieve.

Consistent treatments. A considered plan. Healthy-looking skin.

Your cells have their own recycling system. ♻️

It’s called autophagy — and it’s one of the processes that helps our cells clear damaged material and keep functioning normally.

As we age, that process can become less efficient. That’s why impaired, or “disabled”, macroautophagy is now recognised as one of the hallmarks of ageing.

But this is also an area surrounded by claims — particularly around fasting, supplements and “boosting autophagy”.

The reality? The biology is fascinating, but the human evidence is still developing. Exercise has some of the strongest human evidence for influencing autophagy-related pathways; fasting may influence them too, but we don’t yet have evidence for a magic number of fasting hours that will slow human ageing. And supplements marketed as “autophagy activators”? The claims are currently well ahead of the clinical evidence.

Sometimes the science is less exciting than the marketing. But it’s considerably more useful. 💜

Save this one if you’d like to come back to it.

Evidence first. Always.

That last line before the save is particularly you. It gives the series a point of view without sounding preachy or anti-longevity.
