I'm Learning To 'Breathe' A New Life
If you're anything like me, you probably don't think about something as simple as breathing in and out very much at all.
Why would you?
We take it for granted. We don't notice it.
That is, until something happens that makes us notice.
Waking up wide awake in the middle of the small hours and emerging from bed at 7am feeling like an extra from the Thriller video with Michael Jackson forced me to have a massive rethink about breathing — and about how I was living.
For me, it's been a combination of stress, grinding my teeth, disrupted sleep, sleep apnoea and environmental noise that has made me stop and really look at what my body has been telling me.
And, if I'm honest, it's been frustrating.
Especially when you're a busy person. A creative. Someone who helps others. Someone with ambitions.
I work with clients, write songs, make radio shows, network and spend time with my family.
I don't have time to be tired or unwell!
Except... my body rather bluntly reminded me that I don't get to decide everything.
So I'm learning to listen.
I'm paying more attention to when I have energy and when I don't.
I'm changing the times I work.
I'm spending more time outdoors.
I'm allowing quieter periods in my day.
I may need to miss one meeting or gathering and choose another.
And perhaps most importantly, I'm learning that I don't necessarily have to fit myself into a conventional way of working just because that's what we've been told working life is supposed to look like.
I'm also learning to come back to the present.
I used to be a planner.
And, if I'm honest, I could overthink things.
I'd take something to bed with me and stew over it. Go over conversations. Analyse what had happened. Wonder what I should have said or done differently.
My mind didn't switch off.
Eventually, it caught up with my body — my teeth, my sleep and my breathing.
So now, when I notice that familiar mind-overthinking-ramble, I stop.
I relax my shoulders.
I breathe.
And I come back to where I actually am.
Not yesterday.
Not tomorrow.
Here.
And this has made me think about the women I work with.
Because so many women come to me carrying that same mental noise.
What does he really mean?
Should I stay?
Should I go?
Am I imagining this?
What if I make the wrong decision?
Sometimes we're so busy trying to work everything out that we stop listening to ourselves.
We look outside ourselves for answers when what we really need is some space to hear our own truth.
That is one of the reasons I do the work I do.
I give women the space and soundboard to find their own clarity.
I listen and together we explore what you need, in the moment to feel empowered, to feel better and to be present in yourself and your relationships.
Maybe that's mentoring or maybe it's a deeper exploration of what's going on with past trauma blocks through kinesiology.
Maybe it's soothing, grounding energy healing to calm the nervous system.
Whatever it is you need, I'm here to help you find it.
Because the present is really a gift.
